Naji al-Ali grew up in the Palestinian refugee camp of Ain al-Hilweh in the south Lebanese city of Sidon, where his gift for drawing was discovered by the Palestinian poet Ghassan Kanafani in the late 1950s. Early the following decade he left for Kuwait, embarking on a thirty-year career that would see his cartoons published daily in newspapers from Cairo to Beirut, London to Paris. Resolutely independent and unaligned to any political party, Naji al-Ali strove to speak to and for the ordinary Arab people; the pointed satire of his stark, symbolic cartoons brought him widespread renown. Through his most celebrated creation, the witness-child Handala, al-Ali criticized the brutality of Israeli occupation, the venality and corruption of the regimes in the region, and the suffering of the Palestinian people, earning him many powerful enemies and the soubriquet the Palestinian Malcolm X. For the first time in book form, A Child in Palestine presents the work of one of the Arab worlds greatest cartoonists, revered throughout the region for his outspokenness, honesty and humanity. Review: superb book. - This little book is nicely presented, It covers many aspects of the Palestinian/ Israeli problems both between the opposing sides and the world wide political reactions. Naji a;-Ali's little cartoon character, Hanthala, is famous throughout the Middle East and is iconic for the Palestinian cause. There is an excellent introduction by Joe Sacco which puts the book into context with some historical background. Review: Amazing - A wonderful part of the Palestinian history and very expressive drawing and strong messages!

Its a visible story of the Palestinian struggle. UK given Palestine to the Zionists to make what called 'Israel' on land of Palestine since the Balfour Declaration 1917 nearly 100 years ago. With the USA support, UN and the western governments and the collaboration of the Arab regimes funded by the Arabs oil. Naji Al-Ali was assassinated in London in 1987, no one charged!!!

Excellent book: A child in Palestine: The Cartoons in Naji al-Ali
This is an excellent book, not only about Naji al-Ali, but also about Palestine. The book provides a deep insight into the cartoons and will enable even those like me who grew-up with them, to see them with anew from a different perspective.

There is no death for an idea, no gun can stop the pen of human dreams.
Nani al-Ali has contributed sparkling witness to truth with many cutting edges - a courageous work that is bound to live on - in political, human, and artistic history yet to be written. A man with a conscience, life experience, and a pen is - indeed - to be feared by the underbelly of so-called civilization. Al-Ali's pen continues to be mightier than the sword - or bomb - or wall - or oppressor's boot. We say, thank you! And Hooray for Hanthala, we long to see his face one day - smiling.
