Q: What about the actual THICKNESS of the metal. Will I be able to close my door? With the weather stripping it's a pretty tight closure. Also, do you think can be successfully painted (e.g. spray)?

Metal is not thick and I can close my door easily. I live in a hot climate so don't know about the weather stripping. Outdoor furniture paint should do it.

Don't quite understand the measurement of 1.16, however, I measured my front door and it is 1 11/16" in width. The wreath holder is 2" across the top (the part that fits over the door). It should fit your door with room to spare.
