Success with this tool depends to a large extent on the state of the soil. Ideally it needs to be soft and crumbly so that when the tool is lifted, leaving the plant or seed behind, the earth falls in around it. I have found it brilliant for things like broad bean seed, onion sets but less successful with small plants like new cabbages and broccoli.
