Help needed. How do you safely attach the springs?

Hold the spring in your hand with the hooks positioned to look like two flat letter C's. You'll notice one hook is lower than the other one. The lowest hook is the one to go into the horse, foot rest support pipe.. Insert the hook into the horse foot support then, turning it slightly, insert the other hook into the stand support.

Are replacement parts available for this product? I need the black plastic part that the spring connects to.
