OK, I ordered this set after ordering another 10 inch travel set which arrived damaged. This set was twice the cost of the other set, and it is worth every penny that I paid! The finish on the chess pieces is much smoother and evenly applied than the other set. The quality of carving of the small wood pieces is superior, particularly the knights (the hardest piece to carve). Highly skilled carvers on display. House of Chess even gives you 2 sets of knights, the German Knight style and what looks like the "Fierce Knight" style to choose from (I prefer the German Knights on this set). 2 extra queens and 2 extra pawns as well. The quality of carving, feel, and design of all the pieces are impressive. A joy to play with. The finish on the chessboard is much better looking and likely more durable than on the first cheaper set I ordered. Hinges were misaligned on the cheaper set, resulting in the finish being pulled off the side of the board when opening the hinge. The hinges on this set were correctly installed, and of better quality. The magnetism was a bit stronger on the pieces of this set compared to the cheaper set, although one of the knights has a weak magnet. The board has 4 rubber "feet" that you can place into holes in the bottom of the board, enabling the board to set off a table or whatever surface you are placing the board on. A very thoughtful and useful feature. Comes with a bag to place to the board in, giving a bit of scratch protection to the beautiful board. I am very happy with this set, well worth twice the price of inferior products, and a fine choice for a 10 inch travel set. UPDATE: Seller replaced the piece that had a weak magnet. Incredible customer service! I love this little set! If you want a beautiful travel set for a reasonable price, look no further!

I’ve had my board for a few months now, and it is wonderful! We play chess a few nights a week and our other two boards weren’t what we wanted. One board was a cheap dollar store one and the other board was entirely too big at 15” all around. This magnetic board is great and we love it. The magnets hold beautifully and the pieces are all nice and sturdy. At first I was hesitant to spend this much on a board, but it is well worth it. The size is great and we love that each piece has a place on the inside, so they aren’t just knocking around when packed. Whether you are a novice or have been playing for years, this chess board will give you hours of enjoyment. The board and pieces are very well made, however the bag for storing and protecting not the best. It was a little flimsy and very snug and hard to fit the board inside, so I did make a quilted new one, other than that I have nothing negative to say. Happy with my purchase.

I have been playing chess for 20 years and I have seen all kinds of boards. This one was an unexpectedly pleasant surprise when I received it. It is well worth the money and very impressive to play on and show off to friends. Magnets are strong and it is a great travel board. You can turn the board completely upside down if you want and the pieces aren't going anywhere. If you buy it as a gift, definitely buy it for someone who will appreciate the board, because it is the kind of fancy board that should be well cared for. The only downside, is that it has a strong wood finish and shellac smell when you first receive it. But a few days on your porch or garage, and the strong smell goes away. I think that is just a result of it being hand made and shipped straight to you. I definitely plan to buy another one just like it in the future so I have one for the house and one for travel.

As everyone else notes the set feels,we'll made and solid and is beautiful. The magnets are strong enough for the pieces to stay in place when the board is flipped upside down. I'm very happy with the purchase. 2 suggestions: 1) Consider adding some weight to the pieces. I understand that this is advertised as a portable set, so you may feel limited in how heavy you want to make it, and that heavier pieces may not stay well with the magnets, but some more weight would bring the feel of rhe pieces up to their look. 2) The legs are a nice touch that I appreciate and would probably not cone up with on my own. It would be nice if they were offset from each other and the case inlaid so that the box can close with the legs in place rather than having to remove them. Thanks for the great set!

This 10" chess set just arrived. Wow! Beautifully packaged, the board is superbly finished, shiny, flawless; the wood is beautiful, with four little screw-in feet to stabilize the board. The green interior holds all the pieces, with each hole correctly cut to the corresponding piece. Each color has an extra queen and pawn, and two extra knights of a different style. The pieces are very nice, well-finished, smooth. The magnets hold fine, and I could hold the loaded board upside down with no shift in pieces. I will say that I looked long and hard at all the choices. This one was quite a bit more than others that looked similar, but the quality is what I wanted and it's so worth it! The board also has the algebraic figures engraved into the edges, which were hard to find on the cheaper sets. Two thumbs up for this set!

yeah this thing is nice! I purchased two. One for myself and one for a friend's birthday who has become obsessed with chess and surpassed me. Great portable size, and yet still feels good to play on. The quality is very good and worth the price! I initially ordered the 12" version of this same brand but sent it back instantly without fully opening it as I could tell it wasn't travel friendly at all.

It isreally nice! but after 2 weeks the black wood start to get some small cracks. As chess fanatic I took care of my stuff, but for no reason the board has these small cracks. Really nice chess set, and I like very much but I guess it will not last that much, and it was expensive vs other options. The magnetos works great!! The extra pieces is a super plus.

Very attractive chess set. Magnetic works well and carving of the small pieces is very good. Carrying bag is attractive.

Just received mine in the mail. I must say the pieces are proportional to the board and are beautifully carved and polished. The board opens flat with 4 screws on stands, they are little but fit for the purpose so the extra pieces can remain in holders. All the pieces are secured when in place and magnets are strong. Only small issue with mine is the magnet for one of my white Bishops isn't as strong compared to the rest but hey it's fine. The board exceeded my expectations! Great gift sets for chess lovers. I will definitely be buying a larger set from them if I can find a good deal.

The chess set is of very good quality, and, with the magnetic board is suitable for travel. The extra pieces (two queens, four knights and two pawns) are a bonus.
