Roman Centurion Symbolic of Power of Choice
When I first received this statuette of Epeditus, I was happy to see it looked exactly as pictured in product description. He wears the crimson cloak and embellished tunic so characteristic of military commanders of ancient Rome. The quality of detailed painting on the garments offsets the blandly drawn features of the face. It is believed Epeditus served in the Roman army under the reign of Emperor Diocletian during early fourth century.Diocletian was in the process of launching his final persecution of the Christians. Those in Rome's military ranks who abandoned the offical religion mandated by their Emperor were also punished. Centurion Epeditus was caught up in the purge ,and his subsequent refusal to deny his conversion to Christainity resulted in his execution.
