Works as advertised, fairly simple install, excellent value and as good as any closers
This door closer works as well as another I installed on a different door - but which cost 3x the price. Of particular note, the "hold open" feature works as advertised and the other unit didn't have this, despite being more expensive. See the pic and video for details. Since this works as well as it does, I'm giving it 5 stars. There is a bit more to the story, however. My wife finds our door somewhat difficult to open. I agree that it is a bit stiffer than the ineffective closer it has replaced, but I'm sure it will just be a week or two before we're both used to the increased opening pressure. The installation instructions are adequate but partially incomplete, requiring some skill with tools and guessing at the meaning of plans and instructions that do not state everything step by step with perfect clarity. For example, the closer is able to be installed on the right or left side of the door, near the hinges. As such, it looks the same upside down, so there's no clear way to be sure which direction it should be screwed down. Somewhere I found the only mention of the adjustment screws facing the hinges. That took 20 minutes to find, just a fun little "tip" not found in the install instructions. Nothing was precisely specified about the length or angle of the adjustable connecting arm either. I was prepared to fiddle with it to get the closing speed to be correct, but I seem to have accidentally gotten the length correct or close enough, since it worked OK with my initial guessed at length. I did have challenges most will not encounter, because I have a metal security screen door, and it's frame is not ideal for this application. I had to do some improvisation in placement on the door and door frame. Subtracting out the extra time that all took, I think it would have taken about 30 to 60 minutes for a traditional door application.

Great Price and Works Well!
I wished to replace an old door closer that had a single adjustment screw and which would only open 90 degrees. This one was much less expensive than those advertised at local stores and had two adjustment screws and would open up to 180 degrees. I bought the small size and it handles my 30" exterior door with a very large glass paine easily. It is adjusted to close quickly and also open easily without a heavy push. This is a definite improvement over the old closer. However, the directions need to be studied carefully and may require a magnifying glass. There and three different configurations shown. I chose the Parallel Arm one for my "push" door. It requires 7 wood screws. Only six are provided. I used a large screw from the old closer to fasten the Parallel Plate. Speaking of screws, the two little machine screw used to fasten the Telescopic Arm to the Plate (four provided) look like they might strip under repeated stress and need to be replaced sometime with two short bolts with lock nuts. Maybe. But all in all, I am satisfied with its smooth, adjustable operation for the price. P S: I am disappointed that the "hold open" feature (when opening the door past 90 degrees) does not work on my door. I can adjust the door to close slowly, but not to stand open. Darn!

This design is difficult to fit on a surface mounted door but the product was well made.
I cannot rate this product as it did not fit the door that it was to be used on. However, the part arrived promptly the very next day. The unit was sturdy and well packaged. The instructions were adequate to do the job. The issue with this door closer and all others with a like design is that there are three major methods to attach the unit. Of those three only one was applicable for our door. In attaching it using the regular method the unit didn't fit. The issue was the door is not in the same plane as the door framing. It is about 3/4 of an inch out of plane. In this case the storm door thickness is 3/4 inch farther away from the door frame as it was surfaced mounted. In this case one of the rods that anchor the door to the frame was not long enough. When fully extended only about 3/16 of an inch of this threaded rod would be holding the door. I deemed it not enough to be a reliable installation. The solution would be to add at least a piece of wood of 3/4 inch or greater to the door frame. When investigating this idea it would have meant removing the integral drip edge from the top of the door. The drip edge and top jamb form a single piece at the door top. It would have required carpentry and possibly metal work on the component. At this stage the job was bigger than anticipated. I need to find another solution for this application as many manufacturers have this basic design as their closing mechanism. Our application cannot use this design to solve our problem. It is not the fault of the design or this company but is an issue with any door that surface mounts to an existing door frame. Had the threaded rod been 1/2 inch longer that might have been the solution. Also, this was a small size kit. There are two other kits built for heavier doors that might have a longer threaded adjusting rod. This company makes a nice product. The housing was a solid metal casting that appears to be hot metal poured. The machining, painting and decals were very well done. The threaded rod mentioned above and its receiving female threads fit very well together. All in all I was very pleased with the product but the design did not work in this application.

Great product! Strong pull with soft closure.
Great door closer! A little challenging going to install. Took 3 times and 3 sets of holes to get the right measurements. Don’t bother with the template. Didn’t work. Recommend you install the arm to the frame first, then the base to the door so you only have to drill once.

Bad product.
They make the brand name look like “Baldwin” to be a little deceptive. Then when I received the item, the arm of the closer didn’t budge. It could not be loosened and was a comply dysfunctional item. I purchased 3 and all were the same. Scan item.
