I don't have the exact dimensions; however, it holds up to 3 full hotel pans

How thick is the container? Is 9.96 inches the height measured from the outside of the container or inside the container?

I acquired it by the measurements in the product description. The product is thick enough to provide the insulation for heat as well as cold temperatures for exceeding 1.5 hours.

How do the pans not get smashed?

It's incredibly sturdy. It seems almost like styrofoam but it's so many times more solid.

What's the max temperature it can handle without melting?

I'm not sure, but I had four pans at about 200 degrees, and it had zero issues at all with them. And, there was only a 5 degree temperature drop after two hours.
