Is it normal for the coffee to leave a black, burnt smelling residue?

This happens to me too if I let it cook too long. So I switched to rolling boil on high heat for 3 minutes (stirring about once a minute), then simmer on low for 15 minutes (stirring maybe 3-4 more times) and then I turn if off, secure the lid and let it steep for about 15 minutes before I strain it. Hope that helps.

Why is this only available in ground? I thought whole beans & freshly ground were best..
