Trying to make some fast cash, two small-time crooks devise a plan to hold for ransom the son of a wealthy family in a village. When the kidnapped boy pulls out his Hong Hou (โRed Monkeyโ) costume, the two burglars realize they may be in for more than they bargained. As their ransom notes remain unanswered and their scheme starts to drag on, the two crooks find out for themselves how a child's imagination can spell disaster for two inexperienced criminal minds. Level 1 is written using approximately 300 unique Chinese characters and intended for Chinese learners at an upper-elementary level. Most learners will be able to approach this book after one to two years of formal study, depending on the learner and program. This series is designed to combine simplicity of characters with an easy-to-understand storyline that helps beginners grow their vocabulary and language comprehension abilities. Review: A Great Little Story With Cute Illistrations - I have read The Ransom of Red Chief and am reading it a second time. This book makes the eighth Mandarin Companion graded reader that I own and have read multiple times. Its a cute story and I like the illustrations...especially the one where ็บข็ด is sleeping while the ไธคไธชไธๆๆญปไบบ write the ransom note. He looked like an innocent toddler, while in the other illustrations he was obviously quite ๅๅฎณ. And poor ่้ฉฌใใใ As always, the quality of the adaptation is high, and I keep recognizing new grammar with every reread. I am learning Chinese through several different avenues, trying to create an immersion situation for myself. I really appreciate having the Mandarin Companion books at my reading level, so that I can enjoy entertaining stories while learning and practicing. I am eagerly looking forward to the next Mandarin Companion reader. Meanwhile, I will keep reading and rereading. If, like me, you have trouble seeing the tone marks in the glossary, get yourself a magnifier bookmark. Review: Nothing but praise for this material - I've read several books from this collection in the last year and a half, since I started learning Mandarin, and I can't believe how much progress they've helped me make with my vocabulary. Where I had to constantly tap on the highlighted words to see their meaning, now I can almost read this book without searching the glossary. Can't wait to get started on the next level!

A funny, well written story at a declared complexity level.
A funny, well written story at a declared complexity level. A great graded reader, as are most of Mandarin Companion readers.

The story of this book is a very dull and very annoying and very slow.
This book is probably the most dull of the entire level 1 series. it is very easy to read for a very beginner. The grammar is very easy to follow and understand. but the story is very boring and uninteresting. It is very annoying because it keeps repeating the same over and over again.

Builds a love of Chinese reading
These books are great for beginning Chinese readers. My boy likes them because he does not need to spend a lot of time looking up characters he does not recognize yet. Thanks to these books, he is able to build confidence and enjoy the story before taking on more challenging characters. Heโll get there eventually thanks to books like these.

excellente lecture extra scolaire
Tres agreable a lire et donne reellement la sensation que l'on commence a maitriser la lecture sans l'aide pu pinyin. J'ai litteralement avaler toute la collection et souhaite que d'autres publications voient le jour (au niveau superieur maintenant!!) Merci

Updates disabled my kindle dictionaries.
New updates are awful, my kindle dont recognize chinese anymore, so I can't look for unknown words. They told me this is due to updates, and they can't do anything. My kindle is now useless to me.
