Review: A trip to bygone times, and it delivered... - recommend for young folks not yet into Anime and violence . Remember that these stories were created in the 1950s. Definitely different times. Review: Fun with the Five - I first read these books many years ago as a child. I'm now old enough to enjoy fairy tales again, as CS Lewis said.

Safely getting kids into mystery stories can be tough, when lots of stories are far too suspenseful or the 'crimes' are too dangerous or it's just not mysterious at all and just takky. This author has survived the test of time so can't be ignored. The mysteries are a great level for 7-10 imo, the main characters are interesting, their rapport is realistic for kids their age. The suspense is at a safe level, it's still there but the peril is low. So they want to know what happens but can get to sleep. Over time I start us speculating on who might have done it and making predictions and see if we were right about clues and what they might learnz then new ones as we learn more. I found book 1 in a charity shop, then the whole 15 book box set in another a year later, then bought this on kindle for our holiday. As a story, they occasionally need some adjustment on the fly, due to age, mainly on the odd occasion when cigarettes ends are clues I change it to sweet wrappers or chewing gum. Publishers would be wise to make those adjustments at source, for that reason I won't expect mine to read them alone. I won't have smoking normalised in anyway.
