Hey There, it isn't raised underneath, so no air circulation. I will say I went through a few door-mats before finding this one. This one has been at my front door for over a year with ZERO signs of wear. This LOOKS GOOD, FUNCTIONAL, AND IS NOT CHEAP. Get this one, true me, because I had to go through several before I found what I was looking for. Respect to this company and the mat. The nubs do not hold it up off the floor, but I've not really needed any air circulation. It's a mat.

Smelly? I'm afraid of bad smell.

No awful smell, the first time I open it may have a bit of smell like rubber. but it went away after some minutes, not like the ones I bought at the store, the smell was strong, I threw it away and bought this new one.
