Art Faces in Clay: Dolls, Altered Art and More! (Design Originals)

I really love Maureen Carlson's polymer clay books. I have several that I turn to all the time. However, I'm not sure what it is, but there's something that I didn't like about this book. The projects, while good, are too "abstract" and "unusual" for me. Much of sculptural art can take this turn, but I'm surprised that this book is from Maureen as it doesn't fit her "normal" style.

This book reflects a certain style of polymer clay face dolls. When doing research, I often get books that explain processes that I may not use myself. I have not molded faces or worked that much in polymer clay. I do feel that the instructions in this book and the variety of dolls produced is good. There are techniques that could be applied to other mixed media and doll making, so this is valid and useful. It is not necessary to adhere to a particular style to get instruction from the content of the book, and the techniques contained are covered pretty well.

Love this book. More in it than I had anticipated. Many ideas for faces for mixed- media dolls !

If you want to learn how to make art faces from molds, this is a book for you. However, if you like making your own faces without buying molds, this book is a bit lame. It is more of an instruction book on how to use molds than it is a guide on how to make art doll faces.

If you are a visual learner, this book's great! The examples of what you can do with these molds are creative and fresh, to say the least. Instead of the typical face mold ornament or magnet, or whatever else the local craft stores suggest for mold-use, it is nice to finally see that molds can turn into real, unique ART! The steps, and pictures are very do-able for all levels...and great for teaching group ones-of-a-kind projects!
