This text describes exactly what takes place in the body at the time of puberty. It contains sections on sex and contraception, food, exercise, hygiene and drugs and other problems both physical and emotional. Review: Great book for kids - I was given a copy of the original book many years ago, and used it with my own children. It did the job, despite several embarrassed little faces! I recently bought this updated copy for my friendโs children. I think it continues to explain simply and perfectly โgrowing upโ with simplistic pictures. A small chapter at a time is sufficient for young minds. I was surprised by a few reviewsโthat the book is too much for 10 year olds. The children are getting this information in class, in Junior schools at that age anyway, and it is better for the parents or carers to give their own children the facts of life in a one to one situation, rather than receive misinformation in the playground! Would certainly recommend. Review: A good start to teenage sex education - This book is quite basic and to the point and deals with the mechanics rather than the emotional side of growing up. As a father not living permanently with his daughter, it was useful to be able to at least start with the basics with my just turned 13 year old daughter, given this was not something her Mum wanted to do. We went through 8 pages a night together and it took us 7 nights to complete over a ten day period. I read the book whilst my teenage child listened and we paused after every two pages for questions to be asked and answered. You will need to follow this up with whatever blanks your child has after you go through this with him/her. Naturally most children actually do not understand that the changes going on in their bodies are primarily to prepare them for having children. The act of sex is very, very brief in this book and it needed more emphasis that this is the point whereupon pregnancy or disease can enter the equation. Overall a good start and I would recommend this book to responsible parents looking to introduce the topic of what growing up means and what the changes going through their bodies represent and a brief introduction to the opposite sex and their bodies.

A good start to teenage sex education

As a former teacher (and having previously taught sex education to year 9 students!) this book is a really good introduction to puberty and the issues associated with growing up. I bought it for my 11 year old who is about to start secondary school in September as I wanted her to have a clear grasp of the 'facts' without the embarrassment of having 'the talk' so that she would not be confused or swayed by playground misconceptions I read it through cover to cover to ensure I was happy with the content (some parents may feel contraception and masturbation may not be appropriate subjects to cover as yet) and can conclude that the book is very informative. The illustrations are both diagram style and cartoon style and should appeal to young adults beginning puberty. All in all a great little book and my daughter and I use it as a reference point to have chats about any issues she is concerned about. It is also great as a stand alone for those young people who feel too embarrassed to talk to an adult about the crazy confusing time that is puberty.

Sensitive and Informative
This is perfect for adolescents; the book covers a range of subjects sensitively yet in great detail, and is easy to understand. After having 'The Talk' I gave each of my children this book so that they could dip in and out of it whenever they wanted to, and in the privacy of their own room. Occasionally one of my children comes to me with a query, and this book helps support our conversation. The diagrams are as detailed as the text, which I personally have no issue with, however it may be something to bear in mind if you are buying this for a young child.

Interesting, informative and pitched at just the right level.
My daughter was very reluctant to talk to me about changes she is going through (puberty). This book has enabled me to have some of the right conversations with her. Used the section on working out your estimated final height as a starting point, as that is something she is really interested in, and also the sections on how bones grow. Some reviews had negative feedback on the inclusion of certain sexual terms in the glossary, but I have to say I do not have a problem with that. The definitions are completely matter-of-fact without elaboration. Better surely for the child to know the true meaning of a word than to guess or rely on hearsay / rumour. She is s probably only going to look up the word if she had already heard it.

Detailed and well written Facts of Life.
I bought this book years ago for my children, and found their father learned from it too! So I have bought it again. Now I have grandchildren whose parents don't know how to explain details, and this book is terrific for accuracy simply explained I bought Clare Rayner's Body Book at the same time. The idea is for the little children to have the simple book in their own bookcases, and Mum and Dad can use the Usborne book to give accurate answers to questions. Later when the kids are deemed old enough the book will be put with the kids' books. Remember not everyone paid attention in Biology classes and a lot of adults are a bit shaky on the facts.

Was bit disappointed when book arrived as cover was not the sme and looked a lot more dyed that the one advertised in the picture. The contents is fine though probably all the same information so a good way to talk to my daughter about the changes you go through when growing up.

Clear, thorough, well-illustrated. Highly recommended.
This book looked too advanced for my 10 year old (maybe it isn't) but I read it with my 13 year old son. The lay-out and illustrations make this a good choice for younger teens, colorful pictures and small subject-boxes for related topics on each page make it interesting to look at, unlike the straight text of books intended for older teens. This book kept my ADHD son's attention very well, sparked questions for discussion, and offered all of the information (and more) that he was looking for. We were able to discuss embarrassing subjects objectively and discreetly with this book. The game-plan is to use "What's going on down there" as the next step, but this was a good starting point for my son. This book will be kept on hand for use with my younger children when they are old enough for it.
