How many visible bolts/screw heads are there on the back of the chair? 4 or 8?

4 on mine. There are no bolts on the wood part of the back like the pictures are showing. Only on the metal hardware that holds the back piece and that's it.

Are these stable or do they tip easily?

They are quite stable, nothing like easily tippable. I had a house warming and a friend of mine actually asked for a link to this product, that how she liked it

I don't believe so, I think they only come in set 2. There are others to choose from that come in a single stool.
