Yes, velvet like is a good description, but I think it feels more fine like moleskin The material feels surprisingly nice against the skin considering it is manmade. Can feel a bit hot sometimes but I think that is due to the memory foam.

Hi Michael, The weight of the pillow is about 12 - 13 oz. and the measurement stuffed is about 7" x 7" x 7". If the pillow is warm, it's easier to stuff it smaller. Cold temperatures make memory form feel firmer. If you are trying to make it as small as possible, try throwing it in the drying first to heat it up, or set it in the sun or near a warm heater.
