It uses fasteners, how heavy can the pictures be if you use the fasteners? Do you need to use the fasteners or can you a regular picture hanger?

I have two d hook on the far side of each legth on a larger square frame. Not top and bottom but on the left and right sides. Would this work?

No I don't think this will work. You could put masking tape across the back of the frame from one hook to the other, mark it and then place the masking tape on the wall to mark your holes.

Is it also a stud finder?

The BDMKIT101C is not a stud finder or has the functions as one.
