A light read for Lang Leav fans
After recently reading Lang Leav's previous poetry collection The Universe Of Us, I was excited to read get newest book Sea Of Strangers. This dealt with very similar themes and ideas as her previous book, and from what I've gathered the rest of her poetry, themes such as love, heartbreak, loss, and the everything that accompanies that. The thing that initially attracted me to Leav was her ability to portray love, the calm and stability of it, while retaining it's uniquely passionate qualities. In this respect, Sea Of Strangers did not disappoint. However when it comes to describing heartbreak I personally feel that Leav falls short, portraying none of it's devastation. The shaking realness of her more positive poems is lacking. That being said, I tend to take it leave poems when it comes to collections so I found this easy to overlook. I would recommend this as a light read for those who are already familiar with the poet.

Not My Favourite From Lang Leav.
I often like Lang Leav a little more than other feminist poets because I feel like she writes largely for the reader as opposed to for herself; that's not to say the poems aren't occasionally indulgent or obviously intended to be cathartic, but they're not provoking the reader either. The poems speak widely of love, as is usual, but of a lost or vengeful love as much as a deeply emotive one; the balance is just right actually. There are a number of poems and prose with varying approaches to the deliver - some are single lines and others are standardised or modern style poems or lengthy prose. Some of the metaphorical prose was really impactful, and the rhyming poetry was clever and fun. I did find some of the romantic poems a little too much - cheesy and somewhat poorly written relative to word choice - but otherwise liked this collection. Unfortunately this collection wasn't anywhere near as emotive or thought-provoking for me as Leav's exploration of inevitability in The Universe of Us, and for that reason something felt a little missing for me. Ultimately I'm just not sure I'd be as intent on dipping back into this anthology in a hurry.

Beautiful modern poetry. Simple language, beautiful (prose) poems. Emotional and touching. To read again and again.

It's been a while since Lang Leav came out with a poetry and prose book so raw and emotional as this. First off, this book title was inspired by one of her older poems with the same title, and by gosh, it's amazing. I completely had forgotten about that poem but now I can't get it out of my head again. The inside of both covers of the book even has printing on them that look like water in motion. That's how incredibly detailed this book is. Lang Leav will always be my favorite author and poet and this is another staple to add to your poetry collection. I still can't put it down even though I had read through it already. It's the love I have for the genre all put together in a book. I would definitely recommend this book to a friend, family, neighbor, or even a complete stranger. This book even got me to find a poetry club at my local library, like DANG, how much more can you pull me into the love of words? I've literally made friends with others over this book, that's how much the book moved me and people around me. And much love to the author herself, who has been a constant inspiration in my life with passion and emotion flowing in written words. READ. THIS. DANG. BOOK.
