New Selected Poems: 1984-2004

Overall, this book is very useful for GCSE students who would like to have all the selected poems in one easy to access book; HOWEVER, it is NOT helpful when the book binding disintegrates in your hands on its second use! I bought this book to catch up with English Literature over the summer (as we missed so much school during the Covid 19 lockdown) and have now spent multiple hours of study time cellotaping the book together because each page is coming out as I turn it! Thank heavens I found this out before taking it into school next month. As you can see from the attached photos, it is difficult to align the pages again and the overall impression is a tatty, abused book - very sad considering it is brand new! Review by: P. Bought this for AS English literature class and am really happy with it, lovely poems. Some might find it a bit full on, what I mean is that the author if I remember correctly is a lesbian and knowing this sheds light on a lot of her work. I find that the more you read these poems the more you get to like them and find different ways and interpretations to view them. Plus some are really funny, well I think so, yet others have a more serious or/and even a sensual?? tone.

Carol Ann Duffy is a brilliantly intellectual and accomplished poet. Some of her dramatic monologues are extraordinary. Absolutely required reading for anyone who likes/wants to write poetry themselves.
