To be honest there aren't many flakes and the ones present are small It's mostly pellets- unless the flakes are at the bottom of the container?

Yes, it's suitable, and there's plenty of different tastes and textures even for the fussiest of fish. The one my own fish really love is Tetra Multimix. Golden rule don't over-feed they'll forage. (You could go away overnight the fish won't starve.)
