Perfect in every way! This is the one you want!
I drove a GMC Yukon XL for 16 years, finally downsized to a GMC Acadia. The only doubt I had was camping; we packed the Yukon to the gills, how would we fit the gear into the Acadia? According to the stats, the Acadia has 18 cu. ft. less cargo space than the Yukon - so the Jeggs was the perfect solution! I bought the crossbars for the Acadia from the dealer, not bad, about $150 for the pair. They are adjustable, but I set them bigger than the instructions said, I drilled holes in the outer dents (You'll see what I mean), which I think gave me 32" between the bar centers. I was a bit concerned about how I'd get it on the roof, especially since I'm 68. But it really was a snap to slide the bottom half up onto the rails from one side of the car. I was a bit concerned about scratching the paint, so I put a blanket around the roof rails, but it turned out not to be an issue. I stood on the back door frames to install and tighten the C-clamps that hold the box to the rails, but I'm tall. Someone shorter may need a small step stool. Having succeeded there, I slid the top onto the bottom the same way. I had the locks open (bars sticking down), then one side at a time I lifted the top to pull the bars into the slots on the bottom. Then I closed the locks on the drivers side. I'll admit the locks are a little fussy, but if you take your time and jiggle the key gently, it will go in and turn the bars. With the bars locked on the driver's side, I lifted up the lid on the passenger side, and used the front and back struts to hold it open. Cool! We went on a camping trip, and I fit 4 sleeping bags, two umbrella chairs, some blankets, a rug for inside the tent in the box, closed the lid and locked the other two latches. I put the key on the key ring with my car keys so I wouldn't go crazy looking for it. I could have stuffed more in the box, but was cautious on the maiden voyage. The latch on the front is easy to forget to latch, but you will hear it tapping the box and figure out what the noise is. It really is amazing, but your just can't tell it's up there! The car drove as normal as can be. They give you a little sticker for your windshield that has a picture of a car with a box hitting a tree, with a caption "Look Up!" Have to admit, I thought of going to the car wash, and then remembered that sticker! Being lazy about unloading after a trip, I left the box with all the stuff on the roof for about a week, and really didn't notice it. When I finally unloaded it, I reversed the process I used to put the two halves on the car, no problem at all. I set the lid on a table in the garage, then nested the bottom inside the lid, and left the hardware in the bottom half. I threw all the sleeping bags and blankets on top, no wasted garage space! One thing I suggest for Jeggs, is they might make their listings for this side-open box and the rear-open box more obvious, maybe have the rear-open box listing say in big letters "side open box also available", and vice-versa. I almost bought the rear open box, then realized I couldn't load it from the rear! Luckily I looked further down my original search list and found this side open box, which was actually a few bucks cheaper. I saw there were some negative reviews, but I would ignore them if I were you, especially knowing what I know now. You can spend more on boxes from other manufacturers, but you won't find one that is better. Easy to mount and remove, very sturdy and very roomy. Also a good price! You can't ask for anything more.

Great Purchase
I waited almost a year to write this review because I wanted to test this carrier on a number of road trips. After traveling about 2,000 miles with this carrier attached to my 2019 Dodge Grand Caravan, it passed every test with flying colors. First, it was easy to install. I had to drill two pre-marked holes to enable it to fit on the van’s cross rails, as the rail positions on this particular van are not fully adjustable but this was easy to do. The carrier also easily held everything I needed it to hold: Large suitcase, duffle bag, dog food container, small suitcase and a beach canopy, etc. The 18 cubic feet capacity should be large enough for most people’s needs. I followed the instructions and ensured that the heavy, large suitcase was positioned in the middle of the carrier and between the cross bars to support its weight. The locks work OK but are only made to keep the top of the carrier secured to the bottom. They are not high-quality security locks and wouldn’t serve that function. I discovered that if I manipulated the latches with one hand while inserting the key into the locks, the key slid in pretty easily. I can only assume that if the top comes off during travel, like I read in some reviews, the carrier was not locked properly. It was my experience that when locked according to the instructions, this carrier is very sturdy on the road. I traveled many miles in the rain with this carrier and water never got inside. It also sat in the rain in hotel parking lots overnight on several occasions and did not leak. Some water did pond on top of the carrier while sitting in the rain overnight but splashed off pretty easily when opening without getting inside. I covered the unused holes on the bottom with black duct tape to keep water out while driving. The carrier also withstood gusts of wind up to 60 MPH without any issues. I did not notice any additional wind noise from the carrier when driving at highway speeds and did not notice any loss in fuel efficiency, either. Overall, this was a five-star purchase for me. I don’t know that there is a better carrier for the price. I am glad I purchased it and highly recommend it to those considering a roof top cargo carrier.

High capacity and good value
I waited to review this, because it took me awhile to get it on the car and test it out. This week I embark on at 2000 mile road trip, the real reason I bought the carrier, so I’ll report back after that trip with any updates. My experience so far: my car didn’t come equipped with crossbars on which to mount the carrier, so I had to order those first and figure out how to mount them. Once I got those installed, installing the carrier was simple. I had to drill new mounting holes as my crossbars were not the default distance apart. That was a simple process, and the carrier has regularly spaced markings for drilling other holes. I was able to lift the carrier onto the roof of the car by myself (with a ladder). It’s unwieldy, but not heavy. The mounting hardware works well. I was immediately impressed by how capacious the carrier is. I loaded it with some test cargo in order to see how stable and quiet the carrier was on my roof. I was impressed. Again, I haven’t taken it for many hours at highway speeds yet, but in neighborhood traffic, and for short bursts of highway traffic, the carrier is stable and quiet. so far, I am pleased with this purchase. UPDATE: We just completed the cross-country trip, and this carrier performed admirably. There was some noise from wind, but nothing that really caused a problem. Clamped down tight before departure, none of the components that hold the carrier to the crossbars vibrated loose. The front clamp held fast. No adjustments were necessary at any point on the trip. Great performance and value!

Worked wonderful on cross-country trip
I wasn't sure about this purchase based on the reviews but moved forward anyway. I have to say this far exceeded my expectations. I used this on a cross-country trip from California to Florida during some very high winds. The box was secure and held up beautifully. No issues at all. No extra straps. Just as is out of the box, installed. No issues with the locks. It was easy to install and to remove. Very roomy inside.

Loved it
Used this on a two week trip from Maine to Florida and back. Attached easily to the roof system of my Honda Odyssey. Loved that I could access my cargo from either side. Only concern I had was that the floor of my carrier sagged while fully loaded but this was most likely due to my overloading it and the fact that my roof rack is spaced wider than recommended. That being said, the carrier resumed it’s shape after being unloaded. We took it through some rain and snow and everything inside kept dry. Plenty of storage and a great price

Works great! Easy install for me, seems to be pretty well made
First look, out of the box, I found plastic pieces. Upon review, it seems they were either from the molding process, or fell into the box during shipping. Putting it together couldn't be easier. Take it all out of the box, flip the top, insert the "hinge", insert the clip to keep it in place. I had to drill 2 holes to get it to line up with my bars (they are fixed), but the drilling couldn't be easier - this stuff is pretty soft against probably any drill bit. The hardware is decent, but would have preferred stainless versus black-coated-who-knows-what, but I feel the hardware will be fine. I had 2 of the interior knobs that connect the hardware be a little difficult. Swapped the knobs around, no longer an issue. The box's hinges ARE a little wonky, but work great once both are in. If there are problem with reaching them, well.... can't help you there (I carry a ladder for a tall vehicle). I personally think the latches are pretty well done, and won't fall once properly latched. They are hinged on one side, and "fall" into the box on the extreme sides. The side latches are a bit of a pain (due ONLY to having such a tall vehicle), but seem to be fairly secure. The plastic is quite movable and flexible, so getting it to sit just right might take some very easy slight pushing/pulling to seat correctly. However, reviewing how it was designed, I personally think this is a great setup. The alignment bars make it easy to set down and know it is in the correct location. Once down, I had to push/pull just a little to get the lock to lock properly - again, due to the plastic's flexible nature. The lock probably isn't the most secure lock, but it will keep the latch in place without issue. There ARE provision to add a small lock to each latch on the sides and one in the front, in the event you want to "lock it down" fully. However, if someone is determined to get in, there will probably be broken parts, if the thief is so inclined (just like just about every other "break"-in). Made in America! And considering I paid way too much for a Yakima several years ago, that is much heavier, smaller, the hinges took up too much of the interior, and the latches NEVER worked correctly from day 1, I think this is a great, cheap upgrade. Time will tell how it fares, but so far I am happy with it.

This company SUCKS
If you have any other option I would suggest it. This company provides horrible customer service follow through. I ordered and received this carrier in late February in preparation for a vacation trip in March. After inspecting the contents I found that it was missing the two keys for the locks which seem pretty important to securing the carrier during travel. I called JEGS and played “find someone to answer the phone”. I finally reached someone named Kevin and explained the problem. He asked for the number on the lock. As it was in my garage I told him I would get it and call back, which I did. Kevin did not answer the extension he provided so I pressed extensions until I was answered by someone in Custer service named Bree. Again explained what was going on and asked if she could provide Kevin with lock number which was 103, she said she would document everything and have Kevin send out replacements. After a week or so I had not received anything and called them again, this time talking to Ariel. She checked my order and said there were not any notes about replacement keys. Again went through the whole issue and told her we needed these as we were leaving on vacation in two weeks. She advised she would provide the information to the warehouse to get the keys sent. In addition I took photos of the lock to make sure they had the correct information. This was March 4, 2026. She responded same day and said she had emailed the warehouse and was just waiting for confirmation they shipped. Again not receiving anything I sent Ariel another email on March 7 asking for any update as we were leaving on March 13th. I received no reply and no keys. To insure the carrier would not open during the road trip I had to purchase a set of tie down straps to make sure the thing stayed closed. The product itself is nothing more than two drawn pieces of plastic, extremely poor quality and worth about 25% of what they charge. The whole experience with JEGS has been pretty frustrating and I would not recommend the product or the company for anything.

Great bang for buck, would recommend.
For a budget hard shell carrier this is a great purchase. We bought this for family road trips. (A must as a family of 6) We just drove it from NC to NY and back and it delivered. Didn’t move around or make noise and everything arrived intact. Pros: -price -space (we fit 2 small suitcases, a pack and play, and a foldable infant sit-me-up seat, could have crammed more but didn’t need to) -we went through torrential rain for 20 minutes straight plus about 2 hours of off and on rain and a little water came in, but collected underneath the ridges inside the carrier so nothing got wet. I read reviews for adding some simple weather proofing stripping to make it completely weather proof and we’ll probably do this before our next trip. -assembly (my husband did this part, but he said it took about 10-15 minutes to get up the first time and wasn’t too complicated. He’s put it on and taken it off about 4 or 5 times now and said it gets easier each time, he’s down to about 5 minutes to put it up or take it down) -ease of use (my husband is the one using it but he said that similarly with assembly, there was a slight learning curve but gets easier to use with each use and is straightforward) Cons: -the pre marked holes were not quite in the correct spots, but if you measure first and drill second this is not a huge deal. You just need to make sure you measure correctly. -not as simple to assemble/use as a more expensive carrier Overall: for the price, this is a great purchase and we were very pleased with it. For our family this was worth the cost savings compared to a more expensive carrier. The 4 stars instead of 5 is because of the premarked holes being in the wrong spot.
