Any fabric is absorbent. However, as a beefy, tightly woven fabric in this short if it were used as mentioned (after shower) it would probably be clingy, heavy, and take forever to air dry; not sure you would get the absorbancy like in a terry cloth towel. Light sweat yes.

Do the shorts feel like aft cotton or polyester?

They are all cotton. Comfortable and not super soft, but soft. I'm 5'4 hit me above my knees. The waist could be a little looser as there is a tie, but smaller in waste so I don't really need the tie. I just figured eventually it will loosen up. I bought 3 colors, green, brown and black because I liked the length.

How thick is the fabric? Is the fabric thin or thicker?

The fabric is pretty thick, seems to be good quality. If you have a lot of junk in the trunk the shorts will look funny on you though…
