Awesome product
I am genuinely impressed with this Perma Child Safety retractable gate! It’s one of those products you don’t realize you needed until you install it. The retractable design is fantastic — it keeps the space open and clutter‑free, and it disappears neatly when not in use. The mesh feels strong and durable, and it’s handled both my curious toddler and my energetic dog without any issues. The one‑handed operation is a lifesaver when you’re juggling kids, bags, or both. Installation was easier than I expected, and once mounted, the gate feels solid and secure. I also love that it works for wide openings where traditional gates just don’t fit. If you want something sleek, sturdy, and super convenient, this gate is absolutely worth it.

Perfect for our needs
Purchased this to install outside at the top of the stairs on second story deck to keep dogs from going down to the yard. Picked this one because it was the tallest one I could find, as we have 60 pound lab and pit, (one of whom likes to jump over things if she can get her head above it) Neither dog is a gate crasher, meaning that they don't jump up on and scratch at doors or try to push through things, and they are mostly respectful of a physical barrier. I would not trust this item with a dog that is willing to push the limits, and also a determined small dog could probably get their nose under it and find their way to escape under it. Other then this, it is a great gate. It has been mounted outside on the deck for 6 months now. I worked flawlessly through the winter (snow and ice included), and has been trouble free. sometimes the release knob is a little fiddly, but if you are patient, it can be opened and closed with only one hand. It's when you get in a hurry that it locks up and requires 2 hands to work. One of our dogs has scratched at it a few times and it seems to have held up. There are some scratches in the fabric, but they didn't make a hole. I have no complaints about this gate as far as our needs go.

At first, i thought 5 stars
Installed at bottom of stairs, right up against the first step so no way for dog to get under. Installs easily and nicely, though the screws that come with it are garbage (broke 2). As people have said before, not possible to use one handed. You need to hold the unlock then with other hand open/close. Not a big deal for us, but could have been a switch that does not require you to hold it to open. Bought this to prevent my 13 year old Labrador trying to get up the stairs, not because we do not want him upstairs, but because he is old, has bad hips and often falls whilst trying. First day i thought this is awesome, looks good, and as long as you have 2 free hands, easy to open and close. Neither does it give way much, no way my 13 year old Labrador is getting over/under this. Three days later i see he has managed to shred it somewhat, strands of material are flaying off the material of the gate in all directions. Did not expect him to do that. Same day i hear him trying to get up the stairs as he has somehow managed to pull the top part of the gate off its hook, not sure how as when it closes it goes taut and no way to take it off without flicking the switch. So lost a star because the material is susceptible to pet claws. Lets hope he learned his lesson with the gate as he got stuck on the stairs and couldnt move.

Keeps my 60 pound dogs where they belong
I knew it was a gamble, since this is not rated for larger dogs, but mine aren't the kind who challenge barriers, so I set it up in a large entryway to keep my dogs upstairs in the A/C when the temps were in the 105F+ range outside. I also have a cat who is afraid of the dogs (although they really don't care one way or the other about the cat), so I didn't want her to be freaked out by dogs running amuck all over the house. I have four dogs, two of whom are about 60 pound labs. No sense of personal space, so lots of brushing against the barrier as they played and such, but no real challenging. Super easy to install, especially since it comes with the templates that help you to line up the holes correctly. My only complaint is that it is a little awkward to use in larger openings, because you have to twist a knob on one side while you pull the other side. It would be nice if the mechanism to allow it to expand were an on/off knob, rather than something you have to consistently apply pressure to use, something similar to the mechanism on tape measures. If you have an area that is shorter than your arm span, that should not be an issue. Also, for the inline installation, you have to bend the screen a bit to get it to snap into place, so that adds to the awkwardness while you are trying to keep the tension off. Also, if you have baseboards, you might have to adjust the screen slightly. Happily, mine fit right on the baseboard on the anchor side of the screen, where you don't really have any choice, as the anchor side slides into the brackets. I had to install the bottom anchor on a baseboard, but the kit gives you spacers to bring the top anchor to the same level. It took three for me. The other side gives you a little wiggle room, so if the template doesn't work (mine showed the bottom "handle" being half on and half off the baseboard), you can lower it a bit to make it work. Once in place, it feels very sturdy. My dogs sniffed it and tested it with a bit of a push of the nose, then gave up on it. If you have a wrecking ball of a dog, or an aggressive chewer, YMMV, but it did exactly what I wanted it to do, so I am very happy with it. One of my dogs is going in for knee surgery in a few days, so I will likely employ it again to keep her upstairs while she heals, again keeping the cat happier.

Good gate but they need to send better dry wall anchors .
Baby gate works great but the anchors that come with the gate are terrible. They don’t secure so I can pull the screw out if I pull a little making it not secure .

Indoor/Outdoor Retractable Baby Gate - A Secure Haven for Little Ones and Furry Friends
In the world of baby gates, the Perma Child Safety Indoor/Outdoor Retractable Baby Gate takes center stage, combining the might of Fort Knox with the convenience of a push-and-pull operation. Standing tall at 41 inches and stretching wide up to 71 inches, this gate is the superhero guardian every household needs. The installation may require a bit of drilling, but fear not, for it comes with all the tools you need, like a handy sidekick ready to assist. One-handed operation (not really, kind of a pain to disengage) , a twist-and-lock mechanism, and a resilient build make it the go-to choice for parents juggling a million things at once. Plus, it moonlights as a pet wrangler, keeping those rambunctious furballs in check. This was the main purpose of the gate for us, keep the dog on the porch. Mission accomplished. Safety standards? Check. Versatility? Double-check. It's the gate that says, "Not today, chaos!" Pros: Easy Install Super-sized and super-sturdy design. Versatile protection for both mini-humans and four-legged troublemakers. Cons: Takes a little magic to disengage if you don't have a long wingspan.

It is a window roller shade on its side.
Update: in less than a week the cats figured out how to slide underneath, and when they jumped on the gate the entire thing fell off the wall. Changing rating to 1 star. Original review: The reviews critical of this gate's sturdiness are accurate. It is essentially a window roller shade on its side. The gate fabric is a vinyl mesh that would not stand up for long to frequent clawing by cats or dogs. This gate should never be used for children of any size without constant supervision. I believe that if a toddler fell against it the gate could collapse, especially if it is installed into wall board and not a wood door frame. For that reason the gate should never be used at the top of a staircase, a porch drop off, etc. The gate I received requires two hands to close. Since I have it across a wide opening I have to grab the fabric and pull out extra length (similar to many car seat belts) to get enough slack to secure it. When pulling on the gate fabric, the entire thing has come off the wall hooks. So why have I given the gate three stars and not one? Because for some situations it is ideal: when you have a large opening; when you are keeping the gate closed most of the time or open most of the time; when your pets are small and not escape artists; when you need a bit of a visual barrier without stopping airflow. I'm using it to separate elderly cats who are getting to know each other, and to keep a small senior dog away from cat food. There are two entrances to the room, so blocking one entrance with the gate continually is not a hardship. If I had to open and close this gate a few times a day it would drive me nuts. I am using it across a double door opening over 55" across. When closed, the gate is completely out of the way. The 41" height is ample to discourage small animals from jumping over it. The multiple mounting options are great; I have one side of the gate inside the door frame, the other on the outside of the door frame. I installed it that way because the hook side, when installed inside the door frame, has an opening big enough to put my hand through. Installing both sides outside a door frame definitely makes the gate more secure. I bought it in the gray color (it was the cheapest), which is moderately see-through. The darker the fabric, the more see-through it is (consider window screens, which are usually black). For less see-through, use the white. It was extremely difficult to get the screws into a wood door frame even though I drilled pilot holes. To avoid stripping the screws I had to use a hand screwdriver. I bought "better" wood screws at a hardware store but they were essentially the same as those that came with the gate. On the plus side, the gate's paper guides were extremely helpful in mounting the hardware correctly. If you are occasionally visited by a baby or small child this gate would work to keep them out of rooms with hazardous contents, but only if the child is under constant supervision. Every small child I've known would outwit or demolish this gate in a few minutes.

No Problems at all! Highly Recommended
So, I picked up this gate with the intentions of having to buy all new hardware based on others reviews that the hardware was cheap and faulty. Once arrived, I took everything out of the box and decided to try and install using the hardware provided. I had the unique issue where I had to drill into the vinyl siding of our house and thought the screws would be a problem, but they went in and are sturdy. I even had to take them out a few times and re-adjust (the angles on the siding weren’t easy to work with). The only thing I did notice was that the tops strip easily, but I increased the torque on my power drill, which helped and kept the screws from being stripped. The gate itself is perfect for our application. I have a 2 year old toddler, 2 dogs and a cat. It kept everyone inside the deck, safe and sound. Our wide opening made it a little difficult to pull the gate with one hand but I can look past that since everything else about it is perfect. All in all, the gate and it’s components were easy to install, easy to open and close, and does it’s job of keeping the opening to the stairway closed. If I had another opening I needed another gate for, I’d 100% repurchase. That being said, I recommend this gate.

Perfect gate
This gate is excellent. It took me like 15 minutes to install and it’s perfect for the doorway I needed it for. The doorway is awkward and won’t fit most gates but this one actually fits !! I would 100% recommend !!

Just right for our needs
Quite good quality, just know you will sometimes need 2 hands to properly operate it. We used it for top of the stairs and are quite happy, with perhaps the only critic of this model type is that, while perfectly discreet and more elegant than other models, *you actually need to remember to close it* - whereas bulkier gates usually have an auto-closing mechanism. Other than that, quite happy and it was pretty easy to install.

Wonderful product...
It's a good quality retractable gate and fits 1.8 m entrance/openings. All fittings are top quality and instructions are comprehensive. They have taken care of fixing inside and outside doorway and also provided for the floor having skirting. I purchased for a door way that is about 0.9 m wide and fixed it in another opening that is 1.8 m. It works very well and serves the purpose. I was not sure of how it will fare with year old twins, but it serves well. Installation takes some work if you are not accustomed to drilling/DIY stuff. The skirting we had is granite, luckily I consulted a neighbour who advised against drilling in granite with home use drills. Installed it just above the 10-11 cm skirting.
