My switch has a white plastic pin that engages the ignition lock to turn the switch. I don't see that in the photos of this part. ???

I think you are referring to the ignition switch actuator pin which is a separate part that connects to the ignition switch. I replaced both parts in my wrangler as when one goes the other typically goes bad. The part number for my application was 924-704. If your application is for a jeep wrangler there is a good YouTube video on how to replace both parts

will it fit on a 1997 wrangler TJ ?

No...I don't think so...Its for a newer mid 2000s Jeep.., There is a section in the ordering process that will tell you if this part will fit your make and model jeep..You can request an answer...It ask..Will this part fit my vehicle???
