Works great for an infrared heater
I currently have it in my garage because I have a chair in my garage that I like to sit in and listen to audiobooks while the garage doors open. You have to understand something before you order this heater. Have you ever walked out on a cold day and felt the sun hit you and get a little warmth and still feel the cold of the air? It's like that. I currently have two heaters in front of me. One is a forced air heater and the other is this heater. If I am showing exposed skin like not wearing a shirt then I feel a lot warmer with the infrared heater because it's shining that warm light on skin. However if I am wearing clothes and want the warm air to heat up my clothes to get me warm that I use the forced air heater. I know it's odd but I've dealt with the two different types of heaters before and I know what I was buying. The assembly was actually not bad it only took a few screws to mount it together. It's pretty light and I can easily carry it from room to room. The remote functions as intended and it's actually a decent deal.

A Problem Free Outdoor Heater
Most people will want to buy this to heat their patio or deck. It mounts to the wall but also could be used on a stand if desired. To be clear, I did not buy 2 of these to heat a patio or deck but to heat 2 outdoor kennels for my German Shepherd Dogs, which I keep outside until it is time for bed when I bring them in the house. Regardless of the brand, no heater of this type is going to work that well whether mounted on a wall or self standing in an open area if it is windy. That is just the way it is. If you have a partially enclosed space which blocks the wind, you will do just fine. Now, the 2 kennels I have are open on all four sides but I have from fall to spring installed wind screens around all four sides of the kennels which are 10 ft x 10ft rectangles and 8 ft high. I have hung the heaters from the ceiling posts of the kennels and they work really well. Very easy to assemble. I have wall mounted heaters (different brand) on my deck and I can tell you that these would mount much easier than the ones I put on my deck. Piece of cake really. The package includes all of the hardware you need. I could mount these on a wall in less than 5 minutes. It took me less than that to hang them from the ceiling of the kennels. What about the remote? It works flawlessly and for my money it is essential, not just a convenience. I do not want to walk up to the heater and to turn it on or off if I do not have to. You can do it of course, but hitting the remote is far more convenient. It is easy to operate, self intuitive. You do not need instructions to operate it. As for heat, it has three levels. Level 1 is 900 watts, level 2 is 1200 watts and leverl 3 is 1500 watts. I find level 1 more than sufficient for temps in the 40s. I do not use it if 50 or above. (these are German Shepherd Dogs not people) That said, I am sure level one would be fine for the 50s for people. Level 2 I use for temps int he 30s. And Level 3 for the 20s and below. I have had the dogs out when the temperature was 5 degrees F and they did fine. Remember, these are infrared heaters, they heat objects not the air. So when the dogs stood or slept under the heaters, they were warm, despite the fact that air was quite cold. I warmly, no pun intended, recommend this product. It is first class in every respect.

Good heater.....BUT
I bought this to add some heat in my shed. When you turn it on the heat is there immediately. Keep in mind that this is direct heat and you need to be more or less directly under it to feel the heat. It will work well for it intended purpose. I am deducting 1 star for the mounting system, that is ridiculous and almost required me to grow a third hand to get it done. There was no template in the box as shown in the video. I will be buying a light hanging kit so I can hang and bring the heat down lower. This is my only complaint with this product.

Super high quality heater solution for my garage
This heater is the perfect solution for keeping my two-car attached garage from dipping below freezing at times when the outdoor temperature remains significantly below freezing for days. I mounted heater near the ceiling using the supplied chains by attaching them to the metal struts supporting the garage door rails. I set the heater to about 35F so that it only turns on for those rare times the garage would otherwise dip below freezing. I was able to plug it into the same outlet used by the garage door motors. The units is of extremely high quality. With the remote I can easily control the unit from my internal doorway to the garage. Because it is a radiant heater I do not have to worry about moving parts.

Plant saver
It works great! Easy to use, reliable. I used it for a greenhouse and a sun room for this winter and it did an awesome job keeping the temperature steady and keeping my plants alive. Very accurate with temperature for being triggered on and off, I really love the automatic setting. Previously, I purchased another model with just high and low temperature settings, but that's only useful if you are actively near the heater to be there to turn it off when it gets too hot. For the price, I think it's a really great product. I've only used it for small, closed spaces so no clue how useful it is in a more open areas.

Doesn’t do the job
For an outdoor heater, this doesn’t really work well outdoors. You need to be right on top of it to feel much heat. I was reluctant to buy one of the standup propane heaters because the ceiling is a bit low and the porch is made of wood, but this unit just doesn’t cut it. It’s well made, installs easily and has held up well, but it just doesn’t produce enough heat. Better than nothing, I guess, but I wouldn’t call that a ringing endorsement.

Best indoor space heater I've ever used!
This infrared heater is the best I've ever had. If anyone is wondering, yes, this can be used indoors. It has a stand which lets it be used vertically, with a safety "kill switch" if it is tipped over. It does not make any noise. It does not produce any fumes or odors. Because it is a vertical heater, it doesn't take up much floor space. Best of all, it is incredibly efficient. This thing seems to put out more heat at the lowest setting (900 watts) than other space heaters put out while running full blast at 1500 watts. It is "radiant" heat - there is no fan. It takes a while, but this thing WILL warm a fair sized room. We used it to keep a 12x14 room warm when our furnace went out during subzero temperatures. Sitting in front of it feels like sitting in warm sunshine or in front of a cozy campfire. Great heater!

Looks well built sure puts out clean heat
Just received and tested. Puts out a lot of heat. 1KW setting puts out little over 1 kw and 1500 watt puts out about 1400 kw (but that is good for not taxing breaker). Looks well built. Has thermostat but not much info on programming. Kind of backwards thinking in setting the thermostat to turn on. Also doesnt turn off immediately after probe reaches setting temperature. Seems to take few minutes. Will know more after operation time.

An excellent radiant/IR heater that keeps you warm in the winter
[Revised in mid-2026 after 4 years of use] As a garage dweller, winter sucks. Having tried just about every *other* type of heater, I finally invested in this Dr. Infrared DR-238. Having now used it for 4 years, I'm impressed. First, the obvious things: it's an infrared heater, i.e. it uses light you can't see to heat things. It will heat black things more than white things, will be reflected by shiny things, and if you disperse it too far, it heats less. It will only heat the surfaces the light hits, not the air itself, so if you face it forwards, your back will not be heated. Usual misconceptions abound, however the benefit is that it isn't trying to heat perpetually cold air/concrete and then expect that heat to reach you in a meaningful manner. Thus, you don't need to leave a heater like this on for hours at a time to heat up the air. And the heat is, as advertised, direct and instant. It warms me up plenty while I'm out in a cold night having a smoke or tinkering with something on my workbench. It is quite large, larger than I expected from looking at the pictures, but once it's up in the rafters it's not that bad, and is able to cover a very wide area (where I'm standing to take that picture gets plenty of warmth). The mounting hardware was simple to put together, and while I had to get creative with the mounting in my particular space to get it to heat where I wanted, it turned out well. I wish it could go a little lower in angle (perhaps 35 degrees), but the manual is extremely adamant - and the brackets constructed such - that this isn't possible, so I'm stuck where it is. Would probably be nicer if I was able to mount it another foot or so back but alas, I can't, and I'm not entirely sure why it can't be mounted facing down if at a sufficient height. I previously had a paragraph here complaining about flickering lights when on L1/L2. However, this was mostly due to my own ignorance. The unit is clearly using PWM to regulate the power output, and one side effect of this is that the current draw is constantly bouncing up-and-down. If you have this on a circuit with any other devices, they're going to see that as a fluctuating voltage and may react badly (e.g. LED lights with cheap drivers will flicker). Take this into account when connecting it if you plan to use L1/L2 extensively; it's best run on its own circuit with a solid available current (I used a 20A-rated run myself and it's been flawless since). One remaining complaint I have is with control, and relatedly, a question that was answered with faulty information and which influenced my purchase. A "seller" reported that, if the unit was put on a smart switch and disconnected from power, it would remember the last setting - i.e. auto power-on and go back to whatever heat level it was at. This is *NOT* the case! If the unit loses power, such as being shut off via a smart switch, you must use the IR remote to turn it on. I get it, IR remotes are cheap, quick and easy. But *forcing* IR remotes is annoying. I get that this is a budget unit, but is a $0.05 4k NVM chip to retain state on power off really too much to ask when you've already built the control logic? I'd even prefer a switch and a knob version myself for "set it and forget it" operation with a smart switch, but alas it is what it is. All was not lost though, since as a tinkerer at heart who wanted this automated, I was able to achieve a working and safe setup by using both a smart switch (to ensure it is actually off when I tell it to turn off), and then an ESP8266 and an IR LED kit. The included IR remote is barebones and was easy to scan codes from (for reference, the decimal values are POWER_TOGGLE 33446055, UP 33472575, DOWN 33456255, TIMER_MODE 33480735, TEMPERATURE_MODE 33460335), so with just a quick bit of code and I was able to have a "switch" that rapidly fires the IR commands to turn it on and bump to L3 in under a second. Both the smart switch and ESP8266 IR controller are then hooked up to Home Assistant, which automates turning on both behind a single button (or complex presence detection automation, but that's beyond the scope of this review). Of course, most people would just be happy with the remote and wouldn't go to such crazy lengths for automation, so perhaps I'm being unfair in docking anything for all this, but I'm docking the rating mostly because this isn't clearly communicated anywhere in the description or manual and there is a wrong answer left up in the answered questions potentially influencing buyers like myself, and because implementing state-saving would likely be trivial. After removing my other complaint, I'm also going to remove my half docked star here, in light of the solution above, since after all this time it continues to work flawlessly. All in all, despite my complaints, it is a very good unit with huge longevity and I'm very happy with it. I'd definitely recommend this if you want infrared heat in a decently sized space.

So far, very useful
I looked at a variety of reviews of this brand before buying. The reviews were overall good. Interestingly the ones that were poor tended to be buyers who don't understand how infrared heaters work. QUALITY. The overall quality feels good right out of the box. It was well packed. Instructions were clear. INSTALLATION. I installed it myself in about 30 minutes. I'm 67 in moderate health so most people should be able to do it alone. However having a second person would be helpful and faster. I installed it upside down on purpose as I needed the cord on the left side of the heater. This makes the operation notes upside down but they will peel off. It leaves the small logo upside down but you don't notice. The display is upside down but it really doesn't matter as there are only 3 symbols. L1, L2 and L3. So upside down they look like 17, 27, E7. No problem. Make up some silly code to impress visitors. OPERATION. It works as described and expected. You can feel the increasing heat of each level. It is instant heat which is great. But the best comparison is still to a fire. You can stand around a campfire and your front is warm but your back is cold. This is the same thing. As long as you recognize that, you can position the heater to project heat where you want it. In my case, in the photograph, I want it on my main reading chair and on my small coffee table especially for morning. REMOTE. The remote works very well. Simple to use. EXTENSION CORD. My cord does reach the socket but is hanging as seen in the photo. I've added a 2 foot 12 gauge extension cord bought at a local big box store. About $12. This allows me to run the cord straight across and down so out of the way. Like the yellow line in the photo. I bought a 12 gauge just to be on the safe side for the amount of power being drawn. I suspect a 14 gauge would work and maybe even a 16 gauge. But for the small price difference, I'd rather go with the better cord. POWER DRAW. I've not had the heater long enough to determine its impact on my heating bill. I suspect it will be minor if for no reason then I only use it when I'm there and then turn it off. I likely won't use it in winter with minus temperatures but on those +8oC winter days, I'll likely use it. People have warned that you can only use that on one plug and I can see that would be the case. However I'm able to use the heater of the highest setting, use both lights on my IKEA lamp (seen in photo) and use a google home device all on that same plug. The LED lights and google home don't draw much power but it does mean I don't have to unplug or not use those items that were already there. FIRE POTENTIAL. My heater is not far enough down from the wood above as the requirements said. The 2x4 of the roof is only 11' above the heating element. I thought I might have to put a piece of metal in-between. I don't have to. The wood above gets warm to the touch but not really hot even after 3 hours of operation. You can hold the wood all day if you were so inclined. I did try a piece of metal just to see and the metal got far hotter than the wood so took the metal away. I was also afraid of the roof, with is a transparent panel, as it is only another 4" higher but you can't feel any heat on that panel. Also there is no heat on the wood behind the heater. The heater is well designed to thrown the heat outward. I think this will be perfect for my use. The only reason I don't give 5 stars is that I've only used it so far on cool, early fall days. Once I get through some more seasons then I'll know how efficient it is in providing heat and not at an exorbitant cost. But I am very pleased. One disappointment: While I'd have preferred a Canadian or American product, I am disappointed to find the heater was made in China. The company says their products are engineered and designed in the USA, but don't announce as clearly where their products are made. Those of us who support our own domestic markets and don't want to support tyranny overseas, need to avoid buying from China and thus giving them the money to full their world agenda. If I knew this before I installed it, I would have sent it back.
