BadBadNotGood is the talented young quartet of Matthew Tavares on keys, Chester Hansen on bass, Alex Sowinski on drums & Leland Whitty on saxophone. They formed and became inseparable friends at Humber College''s Music Performance program in 2011 and have been on a critically acclaimed, rule bending musical journey ever since. BBNG took the music world by storm with their 2014 LP, III, a brash yet refined record of angular jazz improvisations, lush ballads, kraut rock, & futuristic hip-hop tinged rhythms which led to a couple years of touring the world & collaborating with some of the best and brightest artists around the globe The boys are back with the new album IV, their most impressive and highly anticipated project yet. IV continues their forward thinking progression, sounding something like a jam session in space between Can, John Coltrane, Herbie Hancock''s Headhunters, Weather Report, Arthur Russell & MF DOOM. With tracks like "Time Moves Slow" featuring haunting vocals from Sam Herring of Future Islands, the syncopated groove of "Lavender," a collaboration with Montreal based producer Kaytranada, the rumbling fusion build of "Confessions Pt. II" featuring Colin Stetson on the bass sax, "Love" which is highlighted with smokey left field raps from Mick Jenkins & the epic chords of "Speaking Gently," IV is an exploration in post-genre virtuosity.

A soulful, reflective and warming compilation
First things first, I think some of the reviews here are for the album IV, which was an earlier release from the band. The records are available in three different colours, standard black, white (limited to 500, and now sold out), and an orange version, available via VinylMePlease. The albums come with a download code for the mix and unmixed tracks in FLAC,WAC and MP3 formats, and a high quality Art Print. This is the latest instalment in a long running series, featuring tracks and artists who have influenced the compilers, for more info visit LateNightTales.co.uk.The band set out to create a soundtrack for reflection and meditation, and it is instantly accessible thanks largely to tracks by The Chosen Few and their cover of People Make The World Go Round, Esther Phillips Home Is Where The Hatred Is, Delegations Oh Honey and Charlotte Day Wilson's Work, to name just a few of my own personal favourites, but there is a far greater depth too, to most of the other tracks, that will make you want to revisit it again and again. Kiki Gyan's Disco Dancer and Donnie and Joe Emerson's Baby deserve a special mention, given that I had never heard either before, and there is an exclusive cover version by Badbadnotgood of Andy Schauf's "To You."The final track is a recital by Lydia Lunch, called You,Me and Jim Beam, and this too deserves a special mention here, simply exquisite. They have crafted a soulful, reflective, and warming compilation, that's perfect to relax and unwind to.

One song
One decent song on the whole album, the only reason it got a star

Modern Fusion
The first album I've bought by BBNG and it ticks most boxes. Sort of modern jazz rythms fused with electronica, though they would probably hate that description!
