Awesome for turning vases
Wow. This stuff is great. I like finishing wood vases with oil then a top coat. The oil pops the grain and gives some warmth. The topcoat gives a sheen. This does both! I just made two vases where I applied the linseed oil first, then some if this varnish. Very small amount goes a long way. Iโd say itโs not gloss, but more semi gloss. Which is what I want. Great product.

Beautiful, natural finish
I was looking for a finish for a custom desk I was building. I wanted something that provided a rich finish but still felt natural. After researching a bit and trying a few options, I selected the Tried & True Varnish Oil. This is essentially a boiled linseed oil with a small amount of varnish solids included. This worked perfectly to bring out the beautiful grain of the mesquite and beli I used to build the desk as well as include a small amount of protective solids. Application was easy. I started by thoroughly sanding the project down to remove any visible marks and scratches then I simply wiped it on using a blue shop rag. I put it on thin, let it set for 30 min, then wiped it all down with a fresh rag. I ended up with 5 coats and the depth on this is beautiful not to mention it smells fantastic. I have read some people have issues with curing on this, but I didn't have any such problems. Of course, I applied it on my back patio during a Phoenix summer so that may have helped, but after 24 hours I wasn't able to wipe off any additional finish. After letting it cure for another couple of days, I put a thin coat of wax over everything to help with the protection. I was most worried about the way the finish would interact with the epoxy in the center of the desk, but it went on easily and polished well. Overall it was the perfect finish for my desk and I have enough to make several more which is a good thing because I have family begging me to make them desks of their own.

Awesome
Love this stuff. Used on many projects. Doesnโt smell bad and easy apply. Makes the wood look amazing. Just use thin coats or it will take a while to cure.

Very good product !
This product gives the rich oil finish color of tung oil but it dries fully overnight and does not remain tacky the way tung oil sometimes does. For fine woodwork pieces such as salad bowls and the like it is a favorite finish for me.

Great Finish Over Aqua Fortis Stain
Nice results applying Tried & True Varnish Oil over aqua fortis stain on curly maple. Aqua fortis is famous for bringing out the curl. I applied in very light coats, basically a finger tip drop at a time. I spread and rubbed in each drop until the finish felt somewhat dry and most of the tackiness gone. I waited at least 24 hours between coats, burnishing with 0000 steel wool before the next coat. Unlike other finishes you might brush on, this linseed oil based finish does better in multiple light coats rubbed in thoroughly. I'm thrilled with the results! How durable? Only time will tell.

Easy to apply, looks great
Why did you pick this product vs others?: Fantastic stuff, easy to apply, looks great on walnut. Leaves a hard finish as well. I put 4 coats down. Sand to 220, apply, let cure, repeat 2 more times. Applied the 4th coat by wet sanding with tried and true on a white Scotch Brite pad.

Awesome finish, just know what you're buying
I've seen some comments complaining about dry times and thick, sticky residue. This is only the case if you apply too much of this varnish, and if you apply it way too thick, similar to how you would paint a piece of furniture with a brush, or when using other types of finish. You have to remember that this is boiled linseed oil and pine resin - it is meant to be wiped on extremely thinly, and wiped off dry after a few hours of the resin soaking into the wood. It doesn't offer as much protection as thick polyurethane finishes, for example, or other synthetic finishes. It doesn't claim to be anything other than what it is and what it does. I love finishing bare wood with this, and I think the quality is extremely high. Just don't use it on something that is going to be battered lots.

The best brand of oil based finish
My favorite brand for linseed products. Not a strong smell, natural, not too dark. Safe to use, even for food related wood working

Great varnish!
Used it as a sanding sealer on a rosewood box, 400 grit. Dried fast, hard and water-clear. Final coat feels like silk. Wonderful old-time product that puts modern polyurethane to shame. Takes a fantastic buff. A little goes a long way.

Easy application, leaves a beautiful finish.
Like the that itโs not a strong odour like most products and itโs really does have a beautiful finish to it. I used it on a wooden chest that I made myself.
