No matter the cost, no matter the danger. They will find the truth. A Supreme Court Justice takes his own life. A woman is found dead, the victim of a grisly murder. A homeless Vietnam vet stands accused. Kathleen Riley (Cher) is an overworked Washington, D.C. public defender who needs a vacation. Instead, she is assigned another case. But this is no ordinary crime with no ordinary criminal. Lobbyist, Eddie Sanger (Dennis Quaid), gets saddled with jury duty just when a critical bill is coming up for vote. While on jury duty, Eddie discovers evidence critical to Kathleen's case and contacts her outside the courtroom - a violation of the law. Bizarre evidence leads Kathleen on a dangerous trail from Washington's seamy underbelly to the highest levels of government. And the closer she gets to the answers, the more her life is in danger. Cher and Dennis Quaid take the law into their own hands in the daring suspense thriller where everything is revealed in court... except the truth.

Suspenseful and impressive thriller
What a great movie! Hollywood used to make excellent thrillers that weren't loaded with gore and violence. Although this has minimal "mild" violence (how does one rate violence?) it was definitely tolerable yet produced the excitement that one appreciates with a tastefully done thriller. Cher and Dennis Quaid made a great team and gave splendid performances. Overall, it's a great, suspenseful story.I just wish we could see the same quality and creative movies that once dominated the screen. Nowadays, it seems Hollywood is more interested in smutty, raunchy, action and violence than creative, entertaining, electrifying, non-violent content. And if they can't do that, they do remakes of earlier films. It appears that Hollywood's creative days have ended. I hope that some production company will rise and begin producing what they once did. Suspect is definitely one thriller that will always be in my library.

No trial attorney would do what Cher does throughout the film
Cher plays a public defender assigned to a murder case in the federal district court of Washington, D.C. (of which I am a retired member; I am very familiar with that court). During the trial, a member of the jury, played by Denis Quaid, contacts her. As she is an experienced attorney, she knows that this is improper and says so. If he backs off, perhaps she can just let it go, though it would be safer for her to report the attempted contact to the judge. There is simply nothing more improper than a trial lawyer having any contact with a juror in a case she is trying. It is in fact a disbarrable offense, and she, an experienced trial attorney, knows it.Yet after a half-hearted attempt to fend him off, she comes to welcome his assistance in preparing her case. Moreover, the judge has apparently heard rumors, but when he asks her point blank if she has had any contact with a member of the jury, she says no, surely knowing that lying to the judge is itself a serious violation of legal ethics. It gets much worse. They go together to the law library, they walk in the street together. If anyone sees them who recognizes them, her legal career will be over, she might even go to jail. And he might too, as the judge admonished the jury at the beginning of the trial not to discuss the case with anybody.None of this makes any sense at all. Of course she wants to win her case and have the charges against her client dismissed, but surely not at the cost of her law license and possibly worse. I simply could not believe that any lawyer would do the things she does for most of the film, and it quite spoiled it for me. (I am still giving it 3 stars, because the acting is very good all around, and the way a federal court works is well portrayed.)

CHER & QUADE.... IN A KILLER COURTROOM ESCAPADE!!!
"SUSPECT" (1987) Cher and Dennis Quade co-star in one of Hollywood's great unheralded courtroom suspense films. A brutal murder trial is enlivened with a spark of romance and a scintillating script. Cher's natural magnetism instantly captures viewers' attention with her sincerity and eloquent sultry eyes; while a youthfully energetic Dennis Quade provides the rescuing hero. The intriguing cast is headed by a silently menacing Liam Neeson as the mute murder suspect, and a pompous John Mahoney is perfect as the presiding judge. The character interactions are fascinating, and you'll share Cher's breathless and perilous flight from the killer inside a dark courthouse corridor. The intelligent script touches on cogent ethical and moral judicial issues while moving swiftly and relentlessly toward the surprising and satisfying climax. The fact that Cher and Dennis are two of my favorite actors made this movie even more enjoyable for this reviewer:)

Excellent film
A voir!
