The appearance of the candles before turning them on is fine. I wasn’t expecting real wax or a super lifelike fake flame as I purchased them primarily to go in votives and for creating a relaxing atmosphere. Unfortunately the flickering is just too active for my taste. I’ve used flameless tea lights before and enjoyed them, but these flicker very actively and at times abruptly (I tried several of them to make sure it wasn’t just one defective one). It’s like having tea lights in a strong breeze, that are nearly blown out frequently by the breeze. Not a particularly relaxing, soothing experience, haha. So I’m returning them and going with a different brand. I am glad I tested them though because I’d been considering some larger flameless candles from this brand too, and now I’ll look at others.
