Can this thermostat control a second stage of heat? E.g. turn a boiler on when the outdoor temperature is below 20 degrees?

No - Cielo Breez Max is a smart AC controller that works with all mini-split, window, and portable units that come with an IR remote. The "Cielo Smart Thermostat" can control the second stage heating. If you wish to control BOTH a mini-split and a boiler, then you will require a smart AC controller (for the mini-split) and Cielo Smart Thermostat (for your boiler). Using our service 'Cielo Linked', you can then set triggers and actions for both the ducted and ductless systems.

If I use this to control 2 separate Mitsubishi mini-splits (2x MSZ-WR18NA) in a large room, could I use just 1 controller to control them both?

You will be able to control both units of the same AC model with a single device IF it is placed in the line of sight of both air conditioners and is within 16 feet. Also, when you send any command, it will apply to both units simultaneously. For example, if you wish to increase the temperature, the IR signal would reach both units at the same time, thus increasing the temperature of both. We recommend having a dedicated smart controller for each unit to make them work as per your preferred settings.

How I get the unit to turn off by itself? Its set to auto, but just continously runs even after desired temp is reached.
