I got this radio because I am in a very heavy air traffic path, and I like to listen to them as they take off and land. This radio has some bad reviews, but it picks up a lot of different frequencies that the average Ham radio does not. Not only does it pickup your international air traffic it does a jam up job picking up miliary traffic. I had to stop it from scanning just to make sure I heard what I heard but it does pick up some of the old UHF TV broadcast that I was only to hear on a scanner. the price is low, and the radio does its job, the battery hods out for about 3 to 4 days no problem and it charges in a short time. It's something to pass time and I can use it with my Ham radio when I need it.

New to amateur radio so you can take this with a grain of salt. The UV5R was my 1st, like many others. #1. The receiver is markedly better than the UV5R8W IMO. Using the same same antenna on the same frequencies this radio was at least 30% better on reception in most cases. I could reach repeaters that were further away but the slight difference in output could be the reason for this also. I like the color screen and the user interface for programming, The user interface is very similar to the UV5R but the edge would got to the 470 for me. I also like the fact you can run VFO/frequency mode on A while running channel/memory mode on B. Another reviewer had an issue with scratching the screen as I thought I did also when wiping it clean with a cotton t-shirt. I eventually discovered that under the larger layer of protective film there is another soft layer that’s precisely cut to fit over the actual screen. Once you remove that you should find the actual screen that’s made of a harder material. 1/9/25 update: I really want to like this radio and it has some good points that I mentioned previously. Cons: scan delete only works as long as the radio is not turned off, otherwise it reverts back when you turn it back on. Only way to change permanently is with Chirp or OEM software. Spurious emissions on 2 meters(144 mHz) are out of spec. Hopefully Radtel will follow Tidradio’s lead and fix this in a firmware update.

I wanted an inexpensive radio to carry with me that would cover 2m Ham, air band, trains, local 911 frequency and Weather, an for an amazingly low price this does it all well!!! Bought 2. Very good reception, good sound and loudness, long lasting battery, universal "C" charge connector, included wall charger. Instructions are lacking, but a little experimenting and watching a couple of YouTube videos and I got it figured out. Got a CHIRP connector (for Baufeng) and managed to get CHIRP going and programmed the radios. Quite the find!

This has way more bands and functionality than my UV-5R. Everything about this radio is good except for the screen and the fact that it doesn’t transmit at 5W. I used my shirt to lightly wipe it and then it scratched. It’s also is labeled as transmitting at 5W not 10W on the back.

Great radio but it’s very poor receiving in the 800MHz band

Can't actually recieve or transmit on HF or CB frequencies but it allows you to enter them. This radio is great, much better than Baofeng, which are being nudered by FCC regulations now. With the radtel, you can transmit on any frequency you enter. When you pay higher prices for other radios, you get a Chinese radio, with even more transmit restrictions. You can spend 250 dollars on a Yaesu but you can literally only transmit on 410 to 460 mhz. And don't even think about MURS. So you pay 5x the price as a Radtel, and you can't use FRS, GMRS, MURS, or 500mhz frequencies. I suspect that is the real reason why sad hams and reddit hams are constantly recommending Yaesu radios and similar. They love gatekeeping and they want you using the most expensive, restrictive radio out there. Why would you buy 4 chinese radios? One for FRS, another for GMRS, another for MURS, and another for HAM? Just buy an unlocked, unrestricted radio like this, and ignore those people. Real people do not care about "spurious emissions" or FCCs dictionary of money making rules (not laws).

All in all a solid radio. First off, the screen “scratching” issue is not accurate. I think folks don’t realize there is a thin plastic film covering the screen that needs to be removed. Yes the thin film scuffs easily bc it’s simply to protect the screen during packaging and needs to be removed. Adding to the confusion is the unit comes with a larger, more obvious plastic screen protector during unboxing. The screen itself IMO is just ok…not super easy to scratch like in reviews but also doesn’t seem very “scratch resistant”. Hope that helps. Moving on…the Aviation reception with supplied antenna is pretty great! Overall the radio does pretty much what it says. Great battery life, good sound quality, and pretty darn good price at around $30. Things needing improvement are the instructions, buttons, and icons which aren’t intuitive and should include a clear “menu” button, red “back” button and green “ok” buttons to make things more intuitive. Also I’d prefer the “0” to be under the “8” like most are instead of to the right of the “6”. Lastly some instructions for using with CHIRP software would be helpful. Took me way to long to figure out how to connect the radio to CHIRP (you have to first “upload radio to chirp”) to connect. And at the time of this posting the software didn’t recognize the 470x had AM capabilities or band coverage down to 26mhz to store Aviation and CB channels using the software. Instead you have to store from radio then sync. U can choose to store aviation channels and select FM so it writes to radio and radio will automatically recognize switch to AM. All in all, pretty cool radio for the price!
