The only book you could possibly need
This book is clearly the authors life works. Ive spent the whole evening browsing through it. It's weighty, with extensive sections on each category of food. Greek food it is essence is quite simple for most cooks it's all doable. There are for a lot of British cooks some ingredients are not easy to find, like pluck, wild greens, snails, veal ( spinach etc could be used I guess for some greens). However, this book is so extensive the inclusion of these recipes isn't a problem, it's a tiny proportion. Not every recipe has a photo illustration. Again for me this wasn't a problem. You can always use Google, or your cooks imagination. This book is like a bible of greek cooking. Impossible to illustrate everything.I think the best way is to sit back relax, browse and start picking out a recipe go from there. For example extensive chapters for each: vegetable dishes, pasta, legumes, soups, meze, etc etc.I'm going to use this book to increase the Mediterranean style cooking. The author seems to be the Mary Berry of greek cooking, she is famous and respected.Vast majority of the recipe ingredients can be found in any UK supermarket. You will certainly eat more veggies and pulses, lentils etc.If could only have one cook book this would be it.

Very complete in recipe variety, but not all dishes have photos.
It is a big and heavy book. I can find a recipe for pretty much any Greek dish I can think of - including many regional ones. I guess there has been a conscious choice of going for number of recipes rather than illustration as only a minority of dishes are pictured. Hence the minus one star - many people are visual so they'd want to select a dish by looking. But I can understand the choice, a lot of recipes would have to be cut or the book, already heavy, would become really unweildy.

Astounded.
Phaidon which I think is not only the name of a god but also a carriage? Have a great range of authoritative cookbooks. They are not the homely times you fall in love with because they become your best friend. More they are the teacher you have a life long crush upon. They are spare on unnecessary charm or entertainment advice. They are grand indeed on nationality, authenticity and flavour. They are simply beautiful books. Possibly the best cookbooks available today. Try one, you won't regret it. I love cookbooks and this.is a whole range, each one amongst the best ever written. Watch out as well for the more diminutive volumes that focus on a single style of food than a national cuisine. I have pizza and ice cream which says just.about.all you need to know about me.

After seeing Vefa on a Rick Stein programme where he visited Greece and met with Vefa at her home i thought I must buy this lady's book as the dishes she prepared for Rick looked so nice. Be warned this book is heavy, probably too heavy for my 90yr old mum to comfortably pick up and look through, however a quick flick through the recipes has given me some ideas on what to cook especially with seafood. This book has some photos of the dishes however for my own personal preference I do like to have photos to show what all the finished dishes should look like rather than guessing and failing however I understand that this would only increase the amount of pages and the final weight of the book. Overall this book appears to have everything you could possibly have to cover Greek food, no need to look to any others you have everything you could possibly need in the one book.
