Brave Wilderness Animal Track Plaster Casting Kit for use on Animal Tracks and Footprints by Coyote Peterson

I had tried to create something similar without resorting to purchasing a kit, but finding molds that would would hold the Plaster of Paris or Quickcrete and still release the finished cast was a real problem. I sued this product for a community science outreach event (World Oceans Day) and used sea shells and dried starfish and sand dollars with the kit to make imprint fossils. I modified the kit by adding a plastic straw through the one end about 1/2 inch from the edge so that the resultant cast fossil could be decorated and hung (Teachers, great for decorating your classroom during a middle school geology unit or history life unit). I suggested that to parents that these imprint fossils could be holiday ornaments as we had added food coloring to the mix and coated the mold with glitter and then glitter on top. I cannot tell you what a huge hit this activity was with the children, their parents, and the community partner I worked with. Thank you for making a great product available to use at home.

This kit comes with the plaster and a bowl for mixing. And a stick to mix the plaster with water. There is a ring that I guess could be placed around the track to protect the ground from shifting. There’s isn’t anything else that makes this special except for the box. So if you have your own plaster, why not use that? I just wish it came with something to help identify the tracks.

My daughter absolutely loves animals and wants to work with them when she grows up. She's always telling us interesting animal facts, so this was the perfect gift for her. We gave it to her at the beginning of a camping trip and she spend the whole first day looking around for tracks. Eventually, she found a good coyote track and decided to make a mold. It worked very well, set quickly, and she had tons of fun doing it. She brought it to school after her trip and showed everyone the track she found and was very proud. This is a great gift!

We ordered this as a gift for a boy who lives in a rural area with herds of cattle moving through and around his yard. This kit gives him a way to connect with the animals that he sees everyday. I think it’s also a great kit to do before any discussion or viewing of fossils because it teaches then the scientific process around preserving and studying them. I did not try it myself but the boy’s mother said it gets points for not being difficult for the parent. Also, my 7-year-old daughter wanted to keep it so I would say it appeals to kids in the 6-10 age range.
