Curlfriends: New in Town (A Graphic Novel)

This graphic novel was a great read. I truly loved the story and its message. The overall theme of embracing yourself and finding your tribe really resonated with me. I especially appreciated watching Charlie’s journey and how hard it was for her to fully accept herself. It felt very real and relatable, especially since I’ve experienced being the new girl in school and not quite fitting in. The visuals were also a strong point, they added so much emotion and depth to the story. Overall, I think this is a powerful and uplifting read not just for youth, but for adults as well. It’s the kind of graphic novel that sticks with you.

My book club absolutely loved this book! The book was relatable and they were able to truly connect with the characters!

The book is great — it arrived damaged.

Delivered to my neighbor. Left package on my porch. Being honest, they wrote a note explaining why the package was open. Interestingly, drivers normally takes a photo of the delivery location. Not this delivery. Products were fine. No complaint with the vendor.

11yo son had to choose a book from a list and he chose this one bc it had pictures lol The artwork is colorful and detailed. The book itself is very high quality. I did not read the story but my 11yo son was underwhelmed. I think this is ONLY because of a mismatch of interests for him and not a reflection on the author or the story. It was interesting enough for him to retain the plot points and make a report on it (though he said he will never read it again lol).

I haven’t read this book myself, but my 11-year-old borrowed it from her school library and absolutely loved it. She enjoyed it so much that she asked me to buy the series as soon as she’d finished it, which says far more than I ever could. What stayed with her was learning it’s okay to be yourself instead of hiding the things you love to fit in. That really resonated with my daughter, who’s at that age where you’re starting to figure out who you are. Seeing Black girls with familiar hairstyles, skin tones and experiences made the story feel even more meaningful. It’s not often a book has that kind of impact, and I’d happily recommend it to other families.

I have to tell you this is awesome. What a lovely new graphic novel series about moving home, starting a new school, making friends, finding your confidence to just be you. Charlie has lived the life of a 'pad brat'… huh? you might think! You'd be forgiven. This terminology isn't in the book, it's terminology we use over here in the UK to describe a child of an armed forces parent who ends up endlessly moving house, moving schools in and out of many different countries sometimes. I’m a Royal Marines Commando 'pad brat'. I had lived in more than 20 houses before I'd left home at 17. Geeezzzzzzz…. So, Charlie - I FEEL YOUR PAIN GIRL!! As military personnel have to retire (mostly) by the age of 45 or 50 years old, or may leave the service early to change careers, Charlie had been used to it being just her and her mummy at home. Adjusting to this full-time male, daddy presence for the first time isn't easy at all. He seems a good guy, but it's just not easy for a tween to suddenly have a different type of negotiator to deal with!! Starting a new school is such a relatable event in any child’s life - looking in magazines at what's cool to wear, how to style hair, not to appear too babyish for fear of what others might think. What's adorable is that Charlie finds a really gorgeous group of friends quite soon into her rather klutzy arrival… or should I say, they find her… but as the story progresses the reader joins Charlie and her friends as they get to know each other and gradually Charlie lets her guard down. I loved reading Curlfriends!! This story'll have you giggle, cringe and will often give you warm hugs. Tween girls+ will love this!! Can't wait for book 2!!

Daughter loved this book. Finished it within a few days. She is age 10.
