Q: Do you have to use gel fuel or can you use methylated spirits?

I have only used gel fuel once on a stainless steel fondue and it burnt it so I have always used meths. It is easier to control the temp

I got the gel but you can use meths

Yes I guess so although the burner itself heats/melts cheese or chocolate quite quickly. The burner is adjustable so you can turn down once melted to keep warm. It's a great product.

Q: Can the lid be taken off?

Yes it can it's very nice maybe a bit on the small side but big enough for 4
