Welcome to Castle Rock, Maine, a lovely place to live…if you don’t mind selling your soul! Acting greats Ed Harris (The Abyss) and Max von Sydow (3 Days of the Condor) head an exceptional cast—including Bonnie Bedelia (Die Hard), J.T. Walsh (A Few Good Men) and Amanda Plummer (Pulp Fiction)—in this supernatural thriller that’s dark, haunting and a hell of a good scare! Sheriff Alan Pangborn (Harris) has a devil of a problem: Suddenly all the residents of his sleepy little town are dying…to kill each other. But at least business is still booming, especially at a new antique store. The shop’s mysterious owner, Leland Gaunt (the nerve-shattering von Sydow), has something for everyone, and his prices are always reasonable: just one small favor…oh, and, of course, eternal damnation! Needful Things comes stylishly directed by Fraser C. Heston (The Crucifer of Blood) and scripted by W.D. Richter (Invasion of the Body Snatchers) from the #1 bestselling novel by the crowned king of horror, Stephen King (The Dead Zone, Cujo, Misery). This special edition also includes an HD Up-res of the 191-minute TV cut of the film. Special Features DISC 1 (4KUHD): • Brand New HDR/Dolby Vision Master (Theatrical Cut) – From a 4K Scan of the Original Camera Negative • Audio Commentary by Director Fraser C. Heston, Moderated by Scorpion Releasing's Walt Olsen • 5.1 Surround and 2.0 Lossless Audio • Triple-Layered UHD100 Disc • Optional English Subtitles DISC 2 (BLU-RAY): • Brand New HD Up-Res Master of the 191-Minute TV Cut • New Interview with Screenwriter W.D. Richter • Theatrical Trailer • Dual-Layered BD50 Disc • Optional English Subtitles Review: good movie - really unusual storyline, liked the characters Review: Great picture and sound with nice bonus features - Movie is great. Good picture quality. The best it's ever looked. Audio is nice as well. It has a 190 minute tv version as well on the bluray only which is interesting to see but man is that really long. It supposedly has an hour of extra footage. Very nice addition if you have the patience to watch it. The movie does kinda drag with that 190 minute version though. Mine didn't have no slipcover which is a little annoying but not a deal breaker by any means. I like it.

NEEDFUL THINGS 4K UHD + BLU-RAY
Kino Lorber Studio Classics released on both Blu-ray and 4K UHD this 1993 adaptation of the sprawling Stephen King novel directed by Fraser Heston and starring Max Von Sydow as Leland Gaunt (the Devil basically) who arrives in a small New England town to open an antiques store but in reality, is there to wreak havoc with the vulnerable citizens, pitting them against each other and sheriff Alan Pangborn (Ed Harris) who vows to stop him. Looking quite good in HD, an upgrade over the 2002 MGM DVD, porting over the theatrical trailer but now including an interview with writer W.D. Richter and most importantly the extended TV cut (by over an hour) on the Blu-ray, with the theatrical cut the UHD with director commentary. I cannot at present view the UHD version but will update if that changes. Mediocre film has a great cast but not the dramatic impact it should have given the source material. Extended cut is interesting but changes little of film's overall issues. Comes with a slipcover.

Not especially bad, not especially good.
For years, probably since The Shining, Stephen King fans like myself have been ranting that the movies would be better if they stuck closer to the original novels. This production does a very admirable job of that, apart from the obvious removal of the Ace Merrill character and his entire part of the story. Other than that watching this movie was like listening to an audio book of the novel... not bad, but not as good as reading it at your own pace. I am not the first reviewer to mention the slow pacing. This does not benefit in any way from its two hour run time. Clearly the screenplay adapters tried to capture the slow build to an explosive climax of the novel, but wound up bogging down their own momentum to the point that you almost dislike the characters. Probably because they never seem to be getting around to doing or saying anything to move the plot along. The very shadowy, dark, low angle photography style does not help either. In many ways watching Needful Things is like watching a student film where you realize that certain members of the cast are brilliant and destined to be great actors, and others aren't. You also get that student film sense of the director and editor trying out different things and learning as they go. This may be due to the fact the director is the son of a famous actor who has only directed a few TV movies here and there and not a more experienced, accomplished director. I don't mean to slam the guy for that. He seems like a very nice man in interviews, and certainly did not make a BAD film here. My only point in bringing that up is that we probably have what we can expect from a director with this depth of experience. Taking that into account, this film is not that bad at all. As far as the dark photography and weird angles, you'd expect more from a guy who by this point had the deep experience of directing three seasons of a smash hit TV show. This leads me to believe he was pressured into this style that is not in keeping with his best work. To see later work by this same DP, a viewer could check out the TV show "Dead Like Me", which in my opinion has great cinematography. All in all you probably won't be missing much if you skip this movie, and you won't be kicking yourself for spending a couple hours watching it either.

Avvincente
Il film riproduce molto bene una delle storie più ingegnose partorite dal maestro Stephen King. Assolutamente consigliato per gli amanti del genere e per gli estimatori di King.

A great spooky movie
This is a movie that I saw years ago and was surprised that I could still find it. A great Stephen King movie and a good deal for the money. It also arrived before the expected date so that was another plus.

Have wanted this.
Have been searching for the extended version of this movie for year's, the quality of the transfer is good, the 4K is a touch better, but to have the TV version is magic, bought a multi region Blu Ray player just to be able to watch it as we are huge Stephen King fans, a must have.
