A fascinating history of the north and what influenced its progression through the ages makes for a really good read.

A good little jaunty read through the history of the northern people of Britain.I’m not normally for a history book like this, I like a more dramatised version of it. So naming people and places and connections drags on a bit for me but it’s very well researched and mostly unbiased in its delivery of facts.

As histories go, this is very complete, from the first Northerners we known about right up to the present day. It's meticulously researched, giving back strong background and defining that most nebulous of things - what is the north? But with the Industrial Revolution, the North came into its own, and more recent days are examined in greater detail (possibly because we have greater detail) - industry, arts, sciences, until of the contributions of us folk up here simply can'd denied or dismissed.That said, it's all done with the wonderfully light touch of a seasoned, gifted uthor who knows how to organise his material and draw the best from it. We may never know quite what makes Northerns tick, but we have no doubt about where they come from and what they've achived. An outstanding achievement.

I bought this for myself but the print is too small for me due to my eye sight. I’ve given it to my wife and l will have to wait until the kindle version comes out.
