Perry Mason Mysteries: The Original Warner Bros. Movies Collection

Enjoyed seeing how different these were from TV Mason. I did not like them.

This is Perry Mason as he was portrayed in the 1930s and (arguably) in the novels.Each film captures the story of the novel it is based on.The characters vary a bit from film to film; this is not a preplanned series so much as a series of films designed to capitalize on the popularity of the novels.The films also vary a bit in tone; some have a serious detective-film air, others are more humorous. But all are worth watching!

Watching this set of Perry Masons after years of watching Raymond Burr in the role may be unfair to these earlier efforts, since I have an expectation of how a Perry Mason should go. But I came to enjoy most of the movies, hence four stars out of five. Warren William stars in the first four movies in the set of six. In THE CASE OF THE HOWLING DOG he defends the great Mary Astor and this movie alone would make the set worth it. I had read this mystery before and knew how it would go, but it was fun to see it on film. In THE CASE OF THE CURIOUS BRIDE, Michael Curtiz directs and Errol Flynn has a small non-speaking part. This is another good mystery. I found it disconcerting to have a new actress playing Della Street in almost every film, since each actress brought her own personality to the part and changed Della significantly. Side kicks were changed as well, some better than others. Sets also go from very elaborate in DOG to a two room office in BISHOP. I suppose there was enough time between films for original audiences to forget or not care, but watching them back-to-back the differences were sometimes glaring.Now we get to the second disc and the next two movies (THE CASE OF THE LUCKY LEGS and THE CASE OF THE VELVET CLAWS) where everything starts to go downhill. Warren William, who was known for playing villains with a heart of stone, begins to overact and show signs of Perry having a drinking problem, characters seem two-dimensional and plots go out the window with holes in them just as big. If the other films were like these I would sell the set.But no! The third disc turns things around again. Ricardo Cortez plays Perry Mason in THE CASE OF THE BLACK CAT. I've always liked Ricardo Cortez - see CHARLIE CHAN OVER NEW YORK. And he plays a likeable Perry without all the eccentricities. This is a good mystery which makes sense and closes plot points nicely, but has all the twists you could want, including court room drama. I would have loved to see Ricardo Cortez in all six of these movies - ah, if you could turn back time. The only problem in this movie is that for some reason the cat is not black but a tortoise-shell, which for a cat lover like me was a problem. Anyway, the cat plays a significant part, just as the howling dog did in the first movie, and may even get more screen time than the dog did.The last movie, THE CASE OF THE STUTTERING BISHOP, changes Perrys again, this time to Donald Woods, another likeable, believable Perry. As in BLACK CAT we see Paul Drake and Hamilton Burger but this movie starts toward the familiar characters of the TV series and there is good court room drama. Another good mystery with a satisfying resolution.I've never seen an old mystery set that came back to quality work after starting to slide to the bottom - the Falcon mysteries are a case in point, losing George Sanders as the Falcon and replacing him with Tom Conway?!! (even if he was Sanders' brother). So I was pleasantly surprised with this set - four good movies out of six is not bad. For four dollars and change per movie, this set is a good buy.

I’m definitely not disappointed in this purchase. And it’s rather nostalgic watching it as recorded from film, with the old streaks etc. like when I was a kid watching black and white films. I’ve only watched two of the six so far, and enjoyed them immensely. There’s a surprisingly sophisticated combination of intrigue and humor in the episodes I watched and am looking forward the the rest. Now, I think I have all TV episodes, and all the old and later movies. If you’re a Perry Mason fan? You won’t be disappointed!

Based upon the few reviews I read, you might say I took a gamble on this 6-movie set. I always enjoyed Raymond Burr's take on Perry. I was curious how he was portrayed roughly 20 years earlier when black and white movies were king…by the way, much differently. I was not disappointed; in fact, I enjoyed all six movies. They were quite refreshing, filled with humor and typical silliness of that era. Now, before you do anything based upon my opinion, you need to know I do not watch movies to analyze or pick them apart. I watch to be entertained…and a great many of the movies made in the 30's and 40's are simply fun to watch, requiring little thinking, only a willingness have some fun. I run into little nasty violence, or profanity, no nudity and no reason not to watch these movies with anyone in my family. On the other hand, I could do without the sometimes extended singing and dancing routines. The old days were better…and laughing wasn't easy in the Great Depression. If you enjoy old movies and are looking for some fun and even a bit of a challenge, let me suggest you give this set a try. Considering the low cost, I don't see how you get burned. Enjoy…before laughter/humor is declared illegal. I think the set deserves 4 and a half stars.

This is not your Raymond Burr, 1960’s Perry Mason!This “Perry Mason Mysteries” movie set was good quality not only in reproduction but in story line quality as well!Warren William was SUPERB as Perry Mason, lawyer, detective, flirtatious boss, & bon vivant! Though I really enjoy Raymond Burr’s TV rendition, these movies were a DELIGHTFUL surprise as it showed a more playful & “living life w/ abandon” side of Perry.Great movies, great price, great time watching them over & over again!

I like this guy; too bad he's little known to people these days. Fun stories. He plays Perry Mason with much more comedy that did Raymond Burr. Both are a great watch.

It arrived yesterday and it plays in our region! The packaging is also recyclable!!! There were instructions on how to separate all the parts of the packaging! And it arrived earlier too! Upstanding! I would recommend this company to anyone.

刑事事件専門の弁護士、ペリー・メイスンと言えば、ミステリー作家、アール・スタンリー・ガードナー(1889-1970)が、1933年の”The Case of the Velvet Claws”で創作したキャラクター。メイスンものは、ガードナーが亡くなる1973年までに、長編82本、短編4本が書き上げられた。現在でも、ペリー・メイスンの名前は広く知られているが、それは、おそらく、ガードナーの小説というよりも、ひとえに、レイモンド・バーが主演したTVシリーズの人気のおかげであることは間違いないだろう。メイスンと言えば、条件反射的に、あの有名なテーマ曲と一緒に、バーの姿を思い起こすという映画ファンは少なくないはずだ。映像化作品としては、やはり、そのバー主演のTV版の存在があまねく浸透してはいるのだが、実は、原作が書き上げられて間もない1934年から、ワーナー・ブラザースが、シリーズ映画化したことは、意外に忘れられている。シリーズ全6本が作られ、うち、第1作から第4作が、ウォーレン・ウィリアム主演、第5作が、リカルド・コルテス主演、第6作が、ドナルド・ウッズ主演という具合。それぞれ三者三様のメイスン像を作り上げているが、ウィリアムのダンディで艶っぽく、ユーモア漂うメイスンが、一番しっくりくるようだ。本DVD-Rは、そのワーナー・ブラザース製作の6本を、ディスク3枚(各ディスクに、2作品)に収めたもの。すべて日本劇場未公開。【Disc1】:●”The Case of the Howling Dog” (1934)刑事事件専門の弁護士ペリー・メイスン(ウォーレン・ウィリアム)のもとには、弁護依頼が、引きも切らず舞い込んで来る。ある日、カートライト(ゴードン・ウェストコット)という男が、事務所にやって来て、隣人の飼う犬の吠える声に悩まされているという奇妙な話をする。しかも、その吠える声は、隣人の誰かが死ぬということの予兆だと言い出す。カートライトのあまりの珍奇な話に、メイスンは、真剣に取り合わなかったのだが…。ペリー・メイスンものの記念すべき初映画化作品。主演は、1930年代の数々の作品で、ダンディな魅力を振りまいて人気を博したウォーレン・ウィリアム。弁護士ながら、堅物ではなく、軽妙で茶目っ気あるメイスン像が何とも新鮮だ。デスクで書類を睨んでいるようなホワイト・カラーという感じではなく、率先して行動する弁護士で、ほとんど刑事といった印象すらある。駆け出しのメアリー・アスターが、事件の容疑者として出演しているのも観どころ。監督は、サイレント期からのベテラン、アラン・クロスランド。●”The Case of the Curious Bride” (1935)中国への旅行の直前、レストランで仲間たちと食事を楽しもうとしていたペリー・メイスン(ウォーレン・ウィリアム)は、旧知の友人、ローダ・モンテイン(マーガレット・リンゼイ)と出逢い、彼女から法律の相談を受ける。彼女の友人が、元の夫が死んだと思って新しい男性と結婚したのだが、実は元の夫が生きていることが判明し困惑しているのだと言う。メイスンは、直感的に、その話は、実は、モンテイン自身のことだと見抜き…。シリーズ第2弾。ワーナーの何でも屋、マイケル・カーティスが監督に就いているところからすると、前作が好評で、若干、格が上がったのかもしれない(それでも、プログラム・ピクチャーであることには変わりはないが)。込み入ったプロットを、テンポの良い語り口でさばいているのは、カーティス監督の手腕。本作でのメイスンは、美食家としての一面も見せている。エロール・フリンが、重要な端役で出演。【Disc2】:●”The Case of the Lucky legs” (1935)脚線美コンテストで優勝したマージ(パトリシア・エリス)は、主催者のフランク・パットン(クレイグ・レイノルズ)から、賞金の1000ドルを翌朝に貰う約束をしてもらう。しかし、パットンは、夜逃げし、怒ったマージは彼の後を追う。マージがモデルを務めるデパートのオーナー、ブラッドベリ(ポーター・ホール)は、彼女を心配し、ペリー・メイスン(ウォーレン・ウィリアム)の事務所を訪れ…。シリーズ第3弾。ウィリアムのメイスンは、ますます板に付いてきて、二日酔いで苦しみつつも、事件を捜査するという、決して高潔な人物ではなく、どこまでも人間臭さ溢れる造形になっている。デラとの掛け合いも楽しく、二人の微妙な距離の関係が生まれている。当然、殺人事件が起こり、ミステリー要素もあるのだが、アーチー・メイヨ監督は、コメディ調の軽快な演出で通し、重くならないのが良い。●”The Case of the Velvet Claws” (1936)夜間裁判所に、ペリー・メイスン(ウォーレン・ウィリアム)と秘書のデラ・ストリート(クレアー・ドッド)が駆け込んでくる。メイスンが、ついにデラと結婚するためだ。晴れて結婚した二人は、新婚旅行へ出る前に自宅に戻る。そこには、銃を向けた謎の女性が隠れており、メイスンを脅して、某政治家と女性のスキャンダルを記事にしようとしている新聞社へ行って、記事掲載を取り消させようとするのだが…。シリーズ第4弾。残念ながら、ウィリアムがメイスンを演じる作品としては最後の一本。本作では、デラと結婚するも、メイスンが事件に振り回されて、(初夜にもかかわらず！)デラのところになかなか戻れないという設定で、ロマンチック・コメディ的な側面が強くなっている。夜間裁判所(結婚)に始まり、夜間裁判所(仲直り)に終わるという粋な構成で、テンポ良く話を進める―シリーズ中、一番短い63分！―ウィリアム・クレメンズ監督の演出も鮮やかだ。【Disc3】:●”The Case of the Black Cat” (1936)百万長者のピーター・ラクスター(ハリー・ダヴェンポート)は、孫娘ウィルマ(ジェーン・ブライアン)が、ダグラス・キーン(カーライル・ムーア・Jr.)と婚約したことを快く思っていない。キーンが、ウィルマが受け取る遺産にしか興味を持っていないように見えたからだ。そこで、ある晩、ラクスターは、ペリー・メイスン(リカルド・コルテス)を呼び寄せ、遺言書を書き換えることにするのだが…。シリーズ第5弾。本作では、リカルド・コルテスが、メイスン役で登板。ウィリアムの人間味たっぷりのメイスンに比べると、冷静沈着で、典雅な雰囲気のメイスン像になって、良くも悪くも、シリーズ一弁護士らしい造形になっている。また、最後に、法廷で、メイスンが事件の謎を解決するという、その後、TVシリーズでも定型化するパターンを用意している点も注目に値する。残念ながら、原作者のガードナーが、コルテスを認めなかったこともあり、彼は、本作のみで降板してしまった。●”The Case of the Stuttering Bishop” (1937)ある日、ペリー・メイスンのもとに、オーストラリアから来たという司教(エドワード・マクウェード)が訪れる。メイスンは、22年前に、自動車事故を起こして、過失致死罪に問われたアイダ・ギルバート(ミラ・マッキニー)という女性の話を司教から聞かされ、その娘ジャニスになりすましている女性の存在を知る。ジャニスは、石油王、ロナルド・ブラウンリー(ダグラス・ウッド)の孫娘で、遺産を相続する立場にあるという。司教は、メイスンに本物のジャニスを探して欲しいと依頼するのだが…。シリーズ第6弾で、最終作。第2作目で、容疑者の夫を演じたドナルド・ウッズが、本作ではメイスン役。ウッズは、無難にメイスンを演じているものの、人間的魅力に乏しく、際立ったところのない印象だ。アン・ドヴォラクのデラ・ストリートは、気さくさはないが、代わりに、ちょっと冷たく硬質な魅力がある。プロットは混線気味で、わかりづらいところも多い。本シリーズの最後を飾る作品にしては(ワーナーは、シリーズを継続する意思があったのだろうか？)、ちょっと地味な一本だ。本DVD-Rは、米Warner Archiveによるオン・デマンド・DVD-R。米TCMの放映用マスターを流用している。残念ながら、6作品ともレストアはされていないので、キズが多く、白黒の諧調、ディテール表現も、極上とは言えない画質。ただし、1930年代の作品ということを考えれば、十分な画質と言えるだろう。音声も、ノイズがあるが、セリフが聞き取れないというようなことはない。Warner Archiveシリーズにしては珍しく、最終作を除き、各作品の予告編(それぞれ3分16秒、2分36秒、2分19秒、2分25秒、2分27秒)が収録されているのは嬉しい。英語字幕は、例によって未収録。本DVD-Rは、北米盤だが、R-0(=All)なので、日本のR-2 プレーヤーで視聴可能だ。ケースは、マルチ・ケースを採用し、3枚のディスクをすっきり収納出来る。もちろん、ペリー・メイスンのファンにも、そして、ミステリー作品ファンにもおすすめのセットだ。
