Product Description A homeless jockey, a millionaire, a washed-up cowboy and a horse named Seabiscuit are the four unlikely heroes who found hope in each other and inspired an entire generation. Tobey Maguire, Academy Award nominee Jeff Bridges and Academy Award winner Chris Cooper star in the critically acclaimed and audience-pleasing Seabiscuit, the triumphant and exhilarating true story about the power of hope and the courage to make dreams come true. Filled with epic action, drama and heart, Seabiscuit will take you on the ride of a lifetime. desertcart.co.uk Review Proving that truth is often greater than fiction, the handsome production of Seabiscuit offers a healthy alternative to Hollywood's staple diet of mayhem. With superior production values at his disposal, writer-director Gary Ross (Pleasantville) is a bit too reverent towards Laura Hillenbrand's captivating bestseller, unnecessarily using archival material--and David McCullough's narration--to pay Ken-Burns-like tribute to Hillenbrand's acclaimed history of the knobbly-kneed thoroughbred who "came from behind" in the late 1930s to win the hearts of Depression-weary Americans. That caveat aside, Ross's adaptation retains much of the horse-and-human heroism that Hillenbrand so effectively conveyed; this is a classically styled "legend" movie like The Natural, which was also heightened by a lushly sentimental Randy Newman score. Led by Tobey Maguire as Seabiscuit's hard-luck jockey, the film's first-rate cast is uniformly excellent, including William H Macy as a wacky trackside announcer who fills this earnest film with a much-needed spirit of fun. --Jeff Shannon Review: a true, uplifting and inspiring film - This is a wonderful film, based on the true story of the race horse Seabiscuit. I am not ashamed to say that I have watched this film at least 3 times and every time it has brought tears to my eyes - tears of joy for the determination of people, and horses, to overcome adversity and to recover from terrible sedbacks, and to go on to achieve the remarkable. Set around the period of the depression in the 1920's the movie relates the story of how 3 people- Seabiscuit's owner, trainer and jockey, overcame their personal losses and tragedies in pursuit of their dreams. Superbly recreated scenes which almost exactly match the original newsreel footage, and totally convincing acting from all the main players make this an entirely convincing and satisfying movie - one of my favourite films ever. You don't need to know anything much about horse racing to enjoy this film - try it - you'll love it! Review: Dvd - Great film

Received in great condition-
I received the dvd in a good amount of time and there was absolutely no issues with the quality of dvd received from the seller. The dvd story itself was very disappointing. In my opinion it was just a poor horse racing movie. Any kind of story was lost by the flicking back and forth in the storylines. In the attempt to make this film stand out, the producers added so much swearing, using God's name in vain, inappropriate brothel scene, kicking a goat...etc Seriously unhappy as I tried to watch this movie with the family and some of which were young. If your looking for a good family horse movie try Secretariat instead with fantastic.

One of those very very good films that you see every so often
I loved this film when I first saw it after it came out so I decided to pick it up off Amazon and watch it again. It's as good as I remembered it to be and even my girlfriend adored it. It's a powerful story of a 4 key players. Firstly the recluse trainer who communicates better with non compliant horses than humans. A charismatic owner who suffers a tragedy early on in the story. A jockey who has his own problems which are evident as the story progresses and finally and, most importantly, the horse himself. This is by and large a feel good film, but one done in a very gripping manner with its own share of disappointments along the way. This is a film up there with fantastic films like Shawshanks Redemption and is very definitely worth buying- you'll love every minute.

Wonderful Story
A brilliant movie about a homeless boy, millionaire and a cowboy brought together by a horse that became famous, very moving and great to watch with their combination they succeed in the race circuit. The actors are fabulous so I rated this an A grade plus for the full on entertainment that goes with the story, the problems of training and the up and downs in their journey to glory. Highly recommended as this is a great movie and worth having and watching. Now time to relax with feet up and munchies by your side. Enjoy!

I saw the last half hour of Seabiscuit on television - enough to know I had to buy the DVD, which I loved. Recently I bought a new condition Toshiba HD-DVD player, as much for it's value in upscaling DVD's as for playing some of my brother's HD-DVD's. I then decided to import ten of my favourite films on HD-DVD from Amazon - most were at ridiculously low prices. "Seabiscuit" is simply magnificent in HD-DVD. There's absolutely everything to like about this film, and with each viewing I am more impressed. In fact I can't think of any reason to rate any of the thousands of films which I like and respect higher than Seabiscuit. Tobey Maguire's flawless acting is probably one of the main keys to its success - and as one of the executive producers he deserves to be exceedingly proud. HD-DVD's slogan "the look and sound of perfect" is proven true in this disc.

This will not certainly be a 1,000 word endorsement, but i can honestly say it is one of the best movies i have seen. I think it will go down as a classic. I have been told that the New England Patriot's all watched this film. It certainly proved what can happen when people beleive in something and work as a team to prove it. THIS WAS CERTAINLY THE CASE FOR SEABISCUIT AND THE NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS PLEASE GET THIS FILM---YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED.

The psychologist, Carl Jung described synchronicity as the experience of two or more events that are apparently causally unrelated occurring together in a meaningful manner. This story brings three figures together in synchronicity: Red Pollard played by Tobey McGuire, Charles Howard played by Jeff Bridges, and Thomas Smith played by Chris Cooper. A jockey that was too big (5'7"), a trainer too old, a horse that was too small, and an owner too dumb to know the difference. The horse that was too small, at 15 hands, was Seabiscuit. Charles Howard moved west with 21 cents in his pocket as a bicycle salesman who became the richest man in California once he started selling the horseless carriage. The loss of his son in a truck accident and the subsequent separation from his wife change the man's life. He meets a drifter and plainsman who loves horses and understands them. He is Thomas Smith. Together they look for horses to buy, and Smith sees something in the eye of one of them and convinces Howard to pay the $8,000 price. Smith also notices a hot-tempered jockey who was abandoned by his family at an early age. He thinks he will be the perfect match for the horse that slept and ate too much--Red Pollard. The cantankerous two take an instant like to each other. Pollard, Smith, and Seabiscuit are underdogs in the time of the Great Depression where underdogs were something to be cherished and cheered. The bowlegged, graceless horse begins to win race after race and captures the imagination of a nation. The horse that is too short starts to win with a jockey who believes in holding the horse back until it can see the eye of the horse next to it, and then lets him loose destroying the spirit of the competition. Howard decides to push for a match race between Seabcuit and the lord of the east, War Admiral, who at a sleek 18 hands, seems to be an easy winner. Radio announcer "Tick-Tock McLaughlin" played by William Macy plays up the match race and adds a humorous touch to the movie. This double DVD series is a great buy. The first is the movie, and the second offers: Seabiscuit vs. War Admiral, the 1938 Match Race; Winners' Circle: The Heroes Behind the Legend; HBO First Look; The True Story of Seabiscuit. The photo book contains a few pictures from the movie and should be inconsequential in your consideration. In addition to the superb acting and story line, David McCullough provides an outstanding narration much as he did for the series, "Civil War." This gives the film the feel of a docu-drama. This is a story about a horse and people who interacted in a way that gave purpose to each other. There's no handicap in watching this. P. S. It would be nice if all the parts of real life ended as the movie. Howard owned several horses, but none ever achieved the stature of Seabiscuit. He would die in California in 1950. Thomas Smith became the top horse trainer in the country. Red Pollard suffered numerous injuries as a jockey, but one injury led him to fall in love with the nurse attending him. He married her and had two children. He was less fortunate financially as he ended up as a valet polishing boots of other jockeys. Seabiscuit was retired at the age of seven, and sired other horses. Its heart gave way at the young age of 14 and he is buried at an unknown location on the Howard ranch.
