Tim Burton's film version of the Stephen Sondheim musical starring Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter. Based on a 'penny dreadful' tale (which later became an urban myth) from the mid-19th Century, this musical tells the tale of Benjamin Barker (Depp), a barber who returns to London after spending years in exile for a crime he didn't commit. He soon discovers from pie-maker Mrs Lovett (Bonham Carter) that, in his absence, his wife has taken her own life and his daughter is now in the care of the man who had him sent away - the dastardly Judge Turpin (Alan Rickman). Seeking revenge and filled with a murderous rage, Barker sets up a barber's shop above Mrs Lovett's premises. Now calling himself Sweeney Todd, Barker kills off all his customers with a razor to the throat and sends their cadavers to the shop below to be used as a tasty new filling for Mrs Lovett's meat pies. What was once the worst pie shop in London quickly becomes one of the city's most popular eateries, but Barker won't be satisfied until he can lure Judge Turpin into the barber's chair... Review: An Unexpected Delight! - It's surprisingly reassuring when a current mainstream movie release based on source material from yesteryear actually transpires successfully to capture the original's essence and intent without being reduced or reworked in order to pander to modern audiences. Tim Burton's screen version of Stephen Sondheim's Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street is boldly faithful to the 1979 Tony Award winning Broadway musical and will, no doubt, be largely responsible for capturing the ears of the next generation of Sondheim devotees. Johnny Depp stars as Benjamin Barker, an accomplished barber whose life is destroyed by the lascivious, malfeasant Judge Turpin (Alan Rickman) when he rapes his wife Lucy, has him falsely sentenced and deported to Australia and takes custody of his young daughter Johanna when her mother is committed to an asylum. On his eventual return 15 years later Barker assumes the alias of Sweeney Todd and takes a room above a ramshackle pie shop run by Mrs Lovett (Helena Bonham Carter) who misleads him to believe that his wife is dead. Todd gets a chance to prove his prowess with the blade when he decries the ersatz Italian confidence trickster 'Signor' Adolfo Pirelli (Sacha Baron Cohen) of hawking fake hair tonic and they go head to head in a public shaving contest which is presided over by Judge Turpin's sycophantic sidekick the Beadle Bamford (Timothy Spall). Todd is declared the winner and his skills are duly noted by the Beadle who later recommends that the unkempt Judge pay him a visit; providing Sweeney with a fleeting opportunity for retribution that's interrupted by Anthony, a young man who is infatuated with Johanna and plans to free her from the clutches of the evil Judge. Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street is a grotesque revenger's tragedy in the Grand Guignol tradition, perfectly suited to the team of Burton and Depp whose previous movies Edward Scissorhands and Sleepy Hollow are equally steeped in this particular brand of goofy Gothicism. When Todd fails to take vengeance on Turpin he goes on a maniacal killing spree, striking up an enterprising relationship with Mrs Lovett providing her with the much needed meat for her notorious 'worst pies in London'. The film manages to blend the operatic heights of Sondheim's score with hair-raisingly stylised images of gore, as copious amounts of ruby red blood spurt from the slashed throats of the various victims whose fate brings them to an abrupt end in barber's chair. The Warner Bros. Blu-ray release features an exemplary 1080p/VC1 transfer maintaining the original theatrical 1.85:1 aspect ratio. Burton's penchant for high contrast blacks and opulent scarlet tones is evident here, unlike the excessive picture crush that marred the Paramount hidef release of Sleepy Hollow. It's no surprise for a film that contains 85% songs and recitative that all the stops have been pulled out in presenting the soundtrack, a TrueHD 5.1 mix of exceptional clarity featuring a massive orchestra of 78 musicians, compared to the customary 27 used in theatrical productions, and an immersive use of the vocal channels. Along with the usual 'EPK type' material are three standout extra features, the first is an historic look at the title character who started life in the Victorian 'Penny Dreadful' serial publications and grew into a legendary villain of stage and screen, the second an introduction to French Horror theatrics of the Grand Guignol and the third (and my personal favourite) is an all-too-brief but compact, contemporary interview with Stephen Sondheim; charting the genesis of the original musical and his close participation in realising Tim Burton's movie treatment of it. Sweeny Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street is an unexpected delight and I am now eagerly anticipating the film version of Sondheim's Follies whose marvellous score is set to benefit from a fresh Aaron Sorkin screenplay. Review: A little pampering for the Gentleman ? - Tim Burtons Sweeney Todd is a musical version of the famous tale of the cut throat barber whose clients ended up inside meat pies. If that grabs your fancy then read on :) The Film is based around the musical written by Stephen Sondheim and tells of a tale of revenge as Sweeney Todd (Johnny Depp) sets to gaining his revenge on a Judge who exiled him many years ago in order to have his wife and daughter for his own. He rents out a room in the fleet street area of London above a pie shop and with the assistance of said pie shop owner Mrs Lovett (Helena Bonham-Carter)starts selectivley killing customers and providing the pie shop downstairs with ample supplies of meat! hoping one day to kill Judge Turpin who destroyed his life. The part of Judge Turpin is masterfully played by Alan Rickman who brings to any part an eery terrifying and evil edge which he makes his own. Mention should also be made also to Timothy Spall who plays the Judges sychophantic Beedle and to Sacha Baron Cohen who is a rival barber and plays out a couple of wonderful scenes with Johnny Depp. An alround mention needs to go to all the cast when you consider this is a musical and the lack of singing tallent involved in the main roles. It is carried off beautifully and although I don't think Messers Depp and Rickman will be giving up there day jobs the whole cast carries it off. The Blu Ray is wonderful quality and is a great transfer which is noted as the film is pretty much void of the grainy effects that so often go hand in hand with blu rays that use such a dark filming technique. The Audio is a joy in HD surrond and the list of extras is very extensive and covers all asepcts of the film and also includes information about the history of Sweeney Todd. Its a Gothic, horrific, Burtonesque nightmare and a sheer joy to watch

Darkly brilliant
Having bought the stage version (Hearne/Landsbury), I was initially less impressed with this version when seen at the cinema. Now, however, having bought the DVD I have revised my opinion of the film version and have grown to appreciate it more with each viewing. Although the singing is not brilliant it does suit the dark, gothic atmosphere of the piece. I particularly like the number 'by the sea' which is colourful and in complete contrast to dark overtones of the rest of the film. The orchestral backing is very good and allows Sondeim's music to really shine through. This adds greatly to the enjoyment of the film and is much superior to the stage version. All performances are very good - I would thoroughly recommend purchase especially in view of the very low price.

Enjoyable blood thirsty musical
Sweeney Todd - The Demon Barber of Fleet Street [Blu-ray] [2007]]] Have seen many others complain about this musical well what were they expecting it to be I sometimes wonder about the IQ drop when taking on a review, it is well acted well sung typical Tim Burton film with Johnny Depp Helena Bonham Carter Alan Rickman and Tim Spall playing brilliant characters it has a good story line set to a gripping sometimes amusing and wicked songs backdrop the quality of the blue ray is tip top and colourful and as for the blood and gore well it is after all the demon barber of fleet street so guess what happens ????? You don't have to be a genius to work it out, costume and settings are beautifully filmed and look out for a suprise turn up of Sacha Baron Cohen yes he of Borat fame in a great and very funny role. Excellent and well worth the money.

Unexpectedly AMAZING
I bought this film due to me and one of my close friends been big Johnny Depp fans. We planned to have a Johnny Depp Marathon and this film was my choice as I thought it would be different to the popular Pirates of the Caribbean films. It has a totally different theme and message that is portrayed throughout the film compared to more comedy based films that Depp has been in. I didn't realise it was an 18 when I first bought it but could soon tell with the blood that could be seen throughout the film. We both really enjoyed the film, there was a lot of singing in it but I felt that this benefited the film even more. GREAT FILM, I would recommend it to anyone and everyone!

Sweeny Todd
Mal was anderes.
