Alastair Duncan tells the story of the meteoric rise and fall of Art Nouveau, which began as a general reaction by young artists and designers to the stifling traditionalism and revivalism of the mid-nineteenth-century fine and decorative arts. The 'new art' first made itself felt around 1895, in architecture, furniture, glass, ceramics and the other applied arts, and fell into eclipse after World War I, until its rediscovery in the 1960s. This is a first class and excellent book and one I would highly recommend for anyone wishing to learn about Art Nouveau from the basics. Duncan covers all aspects of Art Nouveau - graphic arts, painting and sculpture, architecture, jewellery making and furniture. I have found it enormously helpful as well as easy and interesting to read. The split on illustrations is about - half and half with perhaps slightly more black and white but all worth seeing.

Interesting survey by category
This book provides a comprehensive survey of Art Nouveau both in Europe and in America. However it is not really a history of Art Nouveau since the development of the book is not via chronological chapters. The content of the book is organized around thematic chapters by category, type of art: architecture, furniture, painting and the graphic arts, glass, ceramics, jewelry and fashion, silver, metalware and objets d'art, sculpture. It is extensively illustrated, both in colour and in black and white. There is also an index and a bibliography by type of art too. This book might appeal in particular to amateurs who want to know more about a specific art type and have all the names in such and such specialty together for easy reference.
