Hi - would this be recommended for use as a yoga mat? Is the surface slippery?

Introductory class yoga for the purpose of relax is not slippery. Full-fledged yoga for intermediate or higher classes is not recommended due to slipping feet. Because the direction of the tatami stitch is parallel to the longest side of the tatami.

What is the weight for the twin? it shows 7.65 pounds, but the weight for the larger twin xl only shows 6.5 pounds.

Is this comfortable enough to sleep on by itself or does it need a mattress with it?

Sleeping only on tatami mat feels stiff, so it is not recommended. If you just want to relax or sit down, you can just use the tatami mat. If you sleep at night, you need to lay a futon mattress on the tatami mat.
