City of Souls and Sinners (House of Devils) : Edwards, Kayla: desertcart.ae: Books Review: I cannot express how much I love Kayla's writing, her storytelling, her characters, the urban fantasy setting, everything really. It was mind-blowing. This book had me in a chokehold from start to finish. It was another thick book, but I devoured every page, there's not a second where I lost interest in what was happening. What a rollercoaster of emotions. It was intense. It was scary at times. It was deep. And it was passionate. This found family trope still gets me. I love the Devils so much. The way they care for eachother, the way they embrace Loren, the way they act at Hell's Gate, the banter and bickering... It just makes me want to be part of the Devils!! (Not sure Darien would agree to add an 8th Devil though.... 🤣) And I really loved the addition to Max's POV. It brings perspective and insight to that family. And it blends in perfectly, it's not too much, Kayla's writing is so well done that you don't get lost or confused by the multiple POV, it's woven into the story perfectly. And, there's another POV at the end of the book, another character quickly introduced and OH.BOY, I cannot wait to meet that man and his craziness!!!! The murder/mystery part was great. I really enjoyed Finn Solace and Darien's dynamic. The two of them working together was a nice addition to the plot, it reminded me of a FBI TV show, the kind I used to watch growing up and loved, so I was hooked on the case! New characters are introduced and we encounter some previously seen before in CoGaM, who we get to know more here. My favorites are The Butcher, Malakai and Mortifer!!!!! The Butcher is the father figure (Daddy in jargon 😏) that I did NOT except but enjoyed deeply. I really loved that side of him. The way he cares for Darien (and the girls), it's subtle, but it's here 🤧 Malakai and the Reapers: I'm glad we got to see more of the darkslaying circles and especially the Reapers. Malakai is a complex character, a dark one but there's more to that man than his dark exterior, tiny bits we were able to see in this book, but I feel like there's so much more to discover about him and I cannot wait to meet him again. His relationship with Darien was what I loved the most (His way of saying goodbye to Darien 🖕🏼had me cackling everytime haha). And Morty...🤧 That small House Hob owns my heart, I love him so much. His scenes with Loren's were my favorites. I hope we'll get to see him more in the future, him and his precious iced cubes, and that finally, Bandit will accept him as a friend and not a snack!! Bad Bandit 😂 Loren's path in this book was hard to follow, her deal with the imperator had me screaming multiple times. She was brave and fearless throughout everything she had to endure, protecting her new family at all costs. And I love her deeply for that. But what hit me the hardest was Darien's struggle with his mental health and his grief. His journey was heartbreaking in so many ways. After everything he went through, he had finally found his light, which was threatened right away... His path toward finding that light again will be hard. His journey toward happiness is far from over and I'm scared for my babe 😭 Let's talk about the spice 😏🌶️ Darien's dirty mouth is 🥵🤯🔥 Kayla's writing choices for the smut scenes were on point, she alternated between mainly detailed scenes (with dirty talk 😏) and one scene more intimate, that didn't show too much. But as a result, it created privacy, which was needed in that moment. It was beautifully written. The urban setting is still so good, the world building and the magical system keep growing and getting more and more interesting. As I said earlier, we get to see more of the Darkslaying Circles (The Reapers, The Angels of Death, The Wargs, The Vipers and The Huntsmen) and we just want to know more about everything and everyone!!! There is so much more to say about this series... 😭 Please give it a try, don't be scared of the thickness and enjoy the ride!!!!! If you like urban fantasy, mystery, morally grey characters and supernatural creatures, House of Devils is a win ✨ "Welcome back to Angelthene. As always, we hope you enjoy you stay." "Don't ever look at or speak to my girl again, or I'll carve your eyes and tongue out of your head" (And of course, 'touch her and you die' trope! ❤️) Review: Kayla Edwards has me in a chokehold with this series!

This series is an epic love story set in a gritty modern fantasy world… with the ultimate morally grey mmc who would burn the world for the people he loves, a FMC who grows in strength & a found family that would do anything for each other. Throw in a unique magic system, a different take on magical creatures & an unforgiving & harsh world & you have The House of Devils series. This book is BIG, and because of that there is a lot of plot that is built up & takes time. There were moments that I questioned if certain things were needed - but then ultimately the author brought it back around & I could see why it was there & it all made sense. There is ONE moment that I still question - but I’m giving the author the benefit of the doubt that it will make sense in B3 because if it doesn’t it felt a bit ‘too easy’ Other than that the whole story was gripping, enthralling & pulled on every one of my heart strings. I love how the world expanded in this book & how we learnt a lot more about the side characters. The ending had so much happening but was really well paced. Nothing felt rushed so the emotional impact really hit you. Some things I really appreciated: The anxiety rep 🙌🏽 the diabetes rep 🙌🏽 the grief rep 🙌🏽 all fantastic Oh & the spice…. ❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥 - after the wait of b1 this one certainly delivered 🙌🏽 (some personally ick words for me that I looked over but overall it was 💯💯💯) Lastly, Darien is one of the most well rounded characters I have ever read. He is the absolute star of the show. How his grief manifests as anxiety & anger & how he deals with that - while also LOVING his ‘found family’ & Loren so hard that he gives all of himself… is so heartbreaking. BUT, Ultimately that ending…. I’m broken…. In the best & worst ways… I am so happy B2 lived up to my expectations after loving B1, this series will go down as one of my all time favourites
