Does this require rechargeable batteries to operate? Or does it simply extend lifespan of non-rechargeable batteries by using solar power?

Hi. This item doesn’t need batteries, you take the batteries out of the video doorbell and connect the back of the doorbell to the solar panel then click the doorbell to the doorbell back like you would if not using the solar panel and that’s it. Hope this is helpful.

How weatherproof is it

The weatherproof is very good no problem with it so far.

Can this be used with a hard wired chime?

I don’t know, mine is run on batteries but i sent it back anyway as it wouldn’t screw into door properly.
