ZERO Optimism
There is absolutely zero information as to how any individual acting singularily or collectively can gain an ounce of optimism in the face of relentless capitalism at the expense of the 99%. Mr Chomsky is suffering serious delusions regarding what ISIS/ Islamic State actually is. Complete ignorance or deliberately choosing not to acknowledge how ISIS came about and what it's true aims are. He describes President Assad in derogatory terms taking no coignance whatsoever as to the aims of the shareholders of Genie Oil. I am frankly surprised and very disappointed. I expected better, I expected that Mr Chomsky was an intelligent informed man. I see that he is not, or...if he is then he is afraid to openly express the truth for fear of serious governmental reprisals and or his personal financial detriment

Well I believe that statement could have been far better qualified, rather than leaving the reader with what ...
If you are to give a book the title "Optimism Over Despair", you should at least give the reader a smattering of reasons to be, (if not cheerful), then at least defiantly optimistic. Unfortunately, I found this not to be the case, even after ploughing halfway through the book! In desparation, I turned go the final chapter of a similar title, only to be presented with a short passage at the end, saying effectively that we have no choice but to choose optimism over despair. Well I believe that statement could have been far better qualified, rather than leaving the reader with what amounts to an ultimatum. As an example of a more positive outlook, I would direct readers to the publications of Daisaku Ikeda, including various dialogues he has had with prominent figures in the fields of peace, culture, and education.

Tiny font
The font was very small in this edition, making it difficult to read. As for the actual content--if you love Chomsky, no doubt you will love this. I kept falling asleep while reading--perhaps the font was to blame.

Noam Chomsky does it again, as always...
A great book produced by a great man. My husband is a die-hard fan and said it was well-worth the read.

The Grim Truth
In the face of a crushing class war and an environmental catastrophe has brought on an extinction event that will surpass the one six million years ago, Chomsky calls for optimism. A depressed resignation, though completely natural will never lead to the change we need. Chomsky calls instead for action.
