Although these are pretty good walkie-talkies, especially for kids, the fact that they eat batteries puts me off. You need to supply your own and with heavy use, as in actually using them for their intended purpose, we found that after an hour of chatter, the batteries were often wavering which I was not impressed with. Even if you use rechargeable batteries, it will still cost a lot to keep charging them so often if you have kids who are playing with them. It's a shame as without that they're decent.

This is a review of the Aikmi Walkie Talkies for Kids. In the box you get the two radios, matching lanyards, two pairs of fingerless ‘camo’ pattern kid’s gloves and an instruction manual, which is quite small by the way but readable. They require 3 x AAA size batteries in each radio, which are not supplied. The radios have 8 channels plus a small but effective built-in torch - see photos. The small backlit LCD screens are quite informative for something this size. Fitting the batteries in was bit of fiddle to start with but soon sorted as we found it's best to remove the belt clip first, then the back and hey presto, they were up and running. As with most of these sort of items, it’s the range and quality of voice transmission/reception can be a bit lacking but in this case, for something so small they pack quite a decent output as they are after all a child’s toy don’t forget - NOT a professional grade 'all whistles and bells' set. We tried them out in assorted locations from inside buildings to open fields (local recreation area and nearby woods) with the voice transmission/reception very acceptable, considering the size and the low wattage output. They have a quoted rang of 3 kilometres but it all depends on the terrain plus any buildings in ‘line of sight’ really but for our test, a radius of about three quarters of a mile, gave a brilliant, clear reception. Battery usage is quite good so far plus there is an indicator on the screen to show the power reserve left. They come with a 2 year guarantee, so for the current price of around the £30 mark, not a bad deal.

The video goes into much more detail, including an "at home" test within the house, followed by a longer outdoor test that I conducted off-camera. I also talk about the overall build quality and value proposition. However, in a nutshell: Things I liked: + Just the right size for small hands - I'd say anything up to about 9 or 10 years old. + Quality-wise, they feel ... OK. Fine when they're put together, but take the battery cover off and the lightness of the individual parts really starts to show. + They work relatively clearly within the house... Things I didn't like: - ...although they're not the loudest. The test on the video shows this. My mic was positioned literally right above the walkie talkie. - They work OK in a built-up area up to about 150m in my test. After that, the interference made it just too difficult to make out what the other person was saying. - I think £28 is a lot to ask for these. Do I recommend it? Yes, if you need a toy for a 5-9 year old and you can get it for about £20 after vouchers.

These Aikmi Walkie-Talkies came nicely packaged in a branded box. What's in the box? 2 x Aikmi Walkie-Talkies. 2 x Green lanyards. 1 x User Manual 2 Pairs of army gloves. When I 1st opened the box I was surprised how small these walkie-talkies were. I would say they are half the size of a normal walkie-talkie, so I really wasn't expecting much performance. The walkie-talkies come with no batteries, and they take 3 AAA batteries. To fit the batteries it's much easier if you remove the belt clip first before fitting them, as the back can be a little fiddly to get off and on again. And it does feel a little cheap and flimsy so just be careful with the battery door. With the batteries installed, I was eager to test the performance, so I handed a walkie-talkie to my son and off I went for a range test. So I began to walk down my stairs, whilst my son remained upstairs, and once outside my house I started to walk around my block whilst constantly talking to my boy, I had my doubt's about the range, but WOW! These really did surprise me. I made it the whole way round my block just fine. For small walkie-talkies these really do pack a punch in performance, and although these are aimed at kids, I think they are perfect for adults too. These would be great for fishing lakes, beaches, parks, camping, they have a lot of uses because the performance is good. These walkie-talkies are fantastic ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

3 mile range? I don't think so, especially with buildings in the way. Nevertheless, these are great toys for kids and, as long as they remain in range, a fun way for kids and parents to remain in contact. They are the perfect size for small hands and would be perfect for camping trips or hikes during which special discoveries can be relayed immediately and shared. Testing the baby monitor mode (VOX) whereby when one device detects a noise, it will bleep the other one. However, that device will also bleep, which eliminates the possibility of it acting as a baby monitor because that beep could very well wake a light-sleeping baby. They are easy enough to use, but do require a little reference to the instructions. They are a bit tricky to open initially, as you have to lift the lever inside the belt clip which can be stiff at first. Generally potentially useful, but certainly offers the possibility of a lot of fun for older children or even adults for keeping in contact with one another around the house.
