Great back saver
I’ve thatched my lawn with a manual thatcher before. You need this. Save your back and time. It has different settings for depth. If you’re looking just for a good spring raking. I’d keep it set high. I used it before seeding my lawn. So I used max setting to really get into the sod. Then seeded and covered the seed with compost. Worked like a charm. My grass was lush and green, in Colorado of all places. I do have a gripe that the catch bad is very small and fills up after about twenty feet. Otherwise it’s a decent power rake for a small lawn.

Really effective and controllable
I rarely comment on purchases but I am very happy with this one. It performs well for the money. In some ways better than a large commercial thatcher. Here are my notes. It's motor is plenty strong if you are patient. I bought it to thatch some super thick healthy grass and some areas that were patchy and dead from heat and grubs. I used the wire tines, not the metal blades. If you go slow and are patient it does both well. It also really worked well in mossy areas tearing it up and exposing the soil below. Run it as you would a rug shampoo machine. Be slow and patient. Can go back and forward over problem areas as it is nice and light. Just keep the blade spinning and don't push it so fast or hard it bogs down. It has a good depth adjustment for that. I didn't expect it but I did around 8,000 SF of lawn in about 90 minutes. Its pretty wide. And if you are patient it works better in the end than a big gas tine thatcher. Think of pacing it like a slow walk with your lawnmower to get a clean cut. It is just 128$ so yes it feels cheap when you assemble but it is light and easy to move and manage. Perfect for a machine I'll use once a year. BTW the bag does work but is not strictly needed. Finally, after I was done thatching, I ran my mower with the blade low and vacuumed up all the debris. And, if your grass is long, mow it short before using this machine

Worth every penny in time and labor saved.
Works very well dethatching. Very powerful. Way better than using a thatching rake or even an attachment for a riding mower. You just have to pay close attention to go at a steady pace to dethatch evenly to avoid scalping the lawn. The one con I have is the bag is very small. My yard hadn't been dethatched in two years and it would fill up after a few feet. I removed the bag and propped up the guard to allow the thatch to fall out the back. I just went over it with the riding mower to pick it up. Remember to get the lower gauge extension cord.

Buy this one. It is no joke.
WOW ! Just wow ! I was skeptical but thought I’d give it a shot since it costs nearly the same to rent one for a day. The results were UNBELIEVABLE! The electric motor was strong… the thatch bristles are sturdy… it has adjustable height that operates easily. If you’re too low and straining it, it will shut off and you release the handle and it will restart.. giving you. An opportunity to adjust depth. It is lightweight and “partially” self propelled. The bristles pull it along fairly well. I bag clippings 95% of the time and dethatch every 2-3 years. This thing pulled up and TARP full out of my 1500sf front lawn. One caveat… the collection bag is useless. It is tiny and would fill up in 6ft run. You’ll have to rake or use your bagger to get it up.. my bagger worked very well. Buy THIS ONE

Big disappointment, lots of issues,
There are a lot of issues with this item. My grass was only one and a half inches tall, and this would shut off every 2 to 3 feet and would not turn back on. I had it on the correct height setting, I even tried every single one of the settings. No matter what I did, it would continue to shut off every 2 to 3 feet and it took me 5 to 10 minutes to get it to turn back on and then it would just shut off again. It was not overheating and there was barely any resistance to trip the safety. They advertised bag size is way bigger than it actually is. Even when the bag is on, the thatch will just build up underneath the item and won’t even make it to the bag. You get what you pay for.

PICKS UP TO MUCH DIRT, MAKING BAG HEAVY.
Doesn't work as good as I had hoped. It picks up to much dirt, making the bag to heavy for this 80 yr old man. But it still does a decent job. Nice and light weight.

Don't let this pass you up, you need this for your lawn.
For years I've searched for an affordable Thacher for lawns. This is it! This small detacher packs a big bang for the money. After reading other reviews, on this item, I was anxious to get my detacher. With some assembly to do, i couldn't wait to power it on. It didn't disappoint me at all. It was tearing out the dead lawn and leaving the green lawn. Actually, it picked out more dead lawn than i thought i had. Within just a few minutes I had a pile of dead growth the machine pulled out. I'm more than pleased with the performance of this machine, and the price is great, you can't let this pass you up. Get it!

Ok considering the home depot alternative.
So far after 3 days, OK. It's electric and relatively cheap. It's not a beast that'll eat through anything, no. It is decent though. I've only used the power rake tines, not the "scary-fier". I've got a lawn that is thick and wiry in some places and thin in other places. This Lawn Waster handles it all ok. I don't force it or push it beyond what I think it can handle and it's ok. The only thing that is not good about this machine is the air cleaning/filtering system. It was clearly an afterthought only. Small vents on the front of the unit just above the tines and the left wheel. The vents clog up with dead grass within 5 minutes of use. That would not be a big deal except for the fact that you can't access the foam filter without removing 8 screws and the entire top housing. I cobbed up a scoop/guard with plastic from a maxwell house coffee container and 5 screws. This blocks most of the dead grass from being sucked into the vents and the inside filter. Not perfect but it was just a 15 minute cob job. Other than that it's OK. Better than $75 rental of a gas powered (but more powerful) machine from home depot and having only 3.5 hours to finish the whole lawn. With this I can take my time. Oh, and don't forget to buy or have a lot of extension cordage. Kind of a pain, but it's a trade-off.

I only used it once so far but it worked great! Ya people complain that the bag is small but I would rather empty the bag a few times more than rake the grass! Plus use it once and it’s paid for considering what they charge to power rake my yard! Using a cord is a little cumbersome but if you don’t like the cord then go spend 3 times the cost on a gas one, but you only use it once or twice a year so who cares about the cord. Great little machine and found out it’s made by black and Decker that’s why the build quality is pretty decent.

So far, not great experience. Just received the item and putting it together. Noticed damage on the handle. Will update with how well it works. But to start out already damaged, not great. UPDATE: back lawn done, worked great. Powerful little thing!

Excellent product. Easy to use, I used it without the catcher to speed up dethatching , but more raking needed but it's lightweight thatch
