The Best Bass Flies: How to Tie and Fish Them

The collection of bass flies that Jay included stands out in doing great justice to the subsurface largemouth game
I should have written my review the week I received the book and was glued to it - in any case, I want to give it 10 stars. I have more than 300 fly fishing, casting and tying books in my personal library and this is one of the very few (I'm tempted to say the only one but there was Dave Hughes' soft hackle book and I'm sure a couple of others) that I couldn't wait to get time to keep reading and browsing through. The photos and layout are top notch. The collection of bass flies that Jay included stands out in doing great justice to the subsurface largemouth game. Jay's a fun writer and his intro to each fly gives fascinating history and rationale, as well as a window into the life and evolution of a highly successful fish bum. Thinking like an editor, sometimes I thought maybe some intros were too long, but in the end they were very interesting and I wouldn't change anything. Jay fishes mainly ponds and small waters as opposed to the big reservoirs and large rivers of the West and South and this affected his fly choice. In SoCal reservoirs and on the CA Delta, we use shad and bluegill suspender patterns like the EP Peanut Butter and variations of John Rohmer's Diamond Hair Streamer that are very effective and apparently much easier to tie than Jay's Stuntman Eddy (according to Jay's ingenious table showing times to tie each fly the Stuntman takes 45 min - gasp) but this is the only big omission that I can think of that would affect fly guys in the bigger waters. Awesome, awesome job, Jay. 10 thumbs up!

Solid and enjoyable
This book is well worth the price of admission. Many of the patterns will be familiar to anyone who鈥檚 done a bit of bass fishing, but not all, so there鈥檚 something for everyone from beginners to old hands. And I don鈥檛 think there鈥檚 a better set of step-by-step tying photos and instructions out there. I found Zimmerman鈥檚 style original and entertaining, even a little quirky. It鈥檚 not a bland book. Good on him. But the title does promise instruction not just on how to tie but how to fish these gems, and that last runs a bit thin.

A Winner!!!!
Have every one of Jay's books and they are exceptional. This one is no different. Well written, super photography, and step by step instructions. Jay knows how to teach! I bought my first fly rod from Jay years ago, read his blog for years, and feel that he has had the most impact on my improving my fly fishing and fly tying skills more than anyone else. Thank you Jay for once again producing a 1st class teaching tool!

Great fly tiers reference!
One of my go to recipe books for fly tying! I bought the kindle e-book version, the pictures are great and helpful, the procedures and descriptions are very well done. Several "new to me" flies and a few new takes on old patterns.

Excellent
Thoughtful, pragmatic and (not surprisingly) great advice on how to pursue "America's Number One Gamefish" with a fly rod. Written with a wry sense of humor, this book is a real contribution to the fly fisher's library.
