One photo has paper towels hanging from the bottom. Does the string need untied and retied to hold a paper towel roll, or does that string detach?

On one side, there is a big barrel button that slides in and out of a hole. At first it may seem a little tricky, but the key is to have it vertically up and down to slide it in and out, then horizontal to stay in place. No need to untie it. I like mine so much, I ordered the rollup ones for my toiletries and other gear. I am now ordering the 3 cube set. Everything organizes nicely.

Is the construction strong enough for a cast iron pan?

technically yes but it will hang funny since it doesn’t have internal supports. It will pucker forward when hanging in the open position.
