Seven [DVD]

I don't like Seven. All who recommend it say it's a good film and that it is well made. But did they like it? Oh, no. This is not a remake of Frank Capra's "It's a wonderful Life" but a film that is designed to depress. The first time you see it is the worse. You are subjected to events of nastiness that go far beyond gritty realism and just as you begin to hope there will be something resembling a happy ending it delivers the ultimate slap in the face. This film is about sin, about how it corrupts the world around us and about how inescapable it is.Brad Pitt has never been better and is well suited to the character of Mills. Morgan Freeman is great as always and Kevin Spacey also makes a brief but memorable appearance. It is a film that also has a unique visual quality to it but it is the sound that really makes the atmosphere. Using the sound to generate an atmosphere is a shrewd move because many won't notice it unless it's pointed out. Barking dogs, car sirens, continual rain, there is no peace in this film and at times the ambient sounds drown out the dialogue. (It's okay; the DVD has subtitles). Compare Seven with most other films and you'll notice that sound is rarely used in such an artistic way.The DVD itself is very nice indeed. The first disk has the film itself and four commentaries. Everyone featured on the commentaries is honest about their experiences and when listening to them you begin to learn all kinds of things about the person speaking and the movie process. David Fincher's contributions are the real price for me as Alien3 is one of favourite films and I found out a great deal more about him. On the first commentary you'll find out more about Brad Pitt here than a years subscription to any gossip magazine. Perhaps maybe two. Morgan Freeman is also a pleasure to listen too. It is remarkable to learn about what makes these people tick and what makes them laugh. The commentaries also feature Richard Dyer; author of the BFI critique of Seven, and most of the material featured in his book is in the various commentaries. Of course, four commentaries means watching the film four times. A summary documentary would have been nice.The second disc disappoints. There isn't a great deal of material on it, only a few detailed scenes and other stuff.This is an excellent DVD for an excellent film.

I opted for this more expensive US import version because i liked the cover photo and the fact that it opens up like a little booklet to reveal the disc and a few quality print pages on the cast and the director, John Doe's diary etc. The improvement in picture quality (laser sharp) and sound over the DVD version are evident and for me just about worth the £15 asking price considering the age of the release. I haven't had a look at the extras yet but there are some on the disc. A quality movie worthy of a quality upgrade and its place in any movie buff's library. Its region free.

"Seven" is one of my fav movies. Yet, this edition catches eye mostly with it's packaging, stylized as one of John Doe's notebooks filled with his thoughts and other atrocities. On DVDs we will find rather usual staff - various full-lenght comments from contributors, TV spots and featurettes, storyboards, deleted scenes (in fact, not really adding much to the plot or atmosphere). Good purchase, but comparing with special edition of "Silence of the lambs" for example, bit below.

Look, come on now.....surely everyone has seen this great film by now ??? If by chance you haven't...get it now. I'd seen it 3 or 4 times and I had to buy it to own it. It's spooky, serious, worrying, suspenseful, sad, gory in a matter of fact way so its not gory for the sake of it. The 2 main characters interact brilliantly....look , just watch it. You'll be gripped by it !!

Great film and in a steelbook for those like me that collect them, it is again a basic version of the film ( no extras) but great for the price

I had seen this film before, several years ago and glad to see it on Amazon site for a very reasonable price. Almost unrelenting in its nastiness this film is not one for the faint hearted, while Morgan Freeman's acting is brilliant. Will not spoil viewers new to this film by revealing the plot but don't watch it on your own in a darkened rook late at night. It will not help you sleep.Packaging the usual high standard.

EVER SINCE I SAW SEVEN WHEN IT FIRST WAS RELEASED YEARS AGO I HAVED ALWAYS RATED THIS FILM.TIME AS NOT MADE IT NO DIFFERENT TO WATCH EVEN THOUGH IT IS OVER TEN YEARS OLD.IT IS A FILM WHERE YOU HAVE TO PAY ATTENTION TO THE STORY UNFOLDING TO UNDERSTAND THE ENDING.IT WILL SHOCK YOU IN SOME PARTS,AND MAKE YOU JUMP AND CRINGE IN OTHER PARTS, A VERY GOOD FILM TO WATCH.I AM GLAD I NOW HAVE IT IN MY DVD COLLECTION.

A truley awesome film. I was a bit sceptic about seeing this film but after seeing this, its definatley shot to the top 5 of my all time fave films.The story is very well written and a young Brad Pitt plays the role very well with Morgan Freedman playing a very good role again alongside him.The film has you gripped all the way through and has you thinking and hoping that the two detectives can crack the case.Great stuff, get it!

Er verfolgt konsequent seinen Plan, um der Welt seine Botschaft mitzuteilen. Ob diese Botschaft in den Augen der Allgemeinheit richtig ist oder Sinn macht, interessiert John Doe nicht. Wer die Opfer sind, ist dabei egal... oder auch nicht.Interessant ist, dass der Zuschauer in SIEBEN keinen der von John Doe ausgeführten Morde zu sehen bekommt. Man sieht immer nur das jeweilige Resultat: Aufwändig dekorierte Tatorte voller Symbolik. Zusammen mit Zeugenaussagen oder durch Vermutungen der beiden Ermittler setzt sich vor den Augen des Zuschauers das vollständige Bild der Mordserie zusammen. So findet ein Großteil des Grauens alleine im Kopf des Zuchauers statt.Und wie stark ausgeprägt die menschliche Vorstellungskraft sein kann, beweisen jene - scheinbar zahlreichen - Zuschauer, die nach dem Film behaupten, sie hätten den berühmten "Kopf in der Schachtel" gesehen. Dabei kann ich mir kaum vorstellen, dass es David Finchers Absicht war, sein Publikum so zu manipulieren, dass es Dinge sieht, die gar nicht stattfinden. Fincher zeigt jedoch mit einer beängstigenden Perfektion, wie schlecht eine scheinbar harmonische Welt sein kann und dass auch eine scheinbar beherrschbare Situation binnen weniger Augenblicke aus den Angeln gehoben werden kann - und dasd das Leben danach ein anderes ist.SIEBEN ist nichts für zarte Gemüter. Der Film hat sich aufgrund seiner grausamen Konsequenz wie kaum ein anderer in mein Gedächtnis gebrannt. Wenn John Doe irgendwann in aller Seelenruhe zu den ermittelnden Detectives jenen Satz sagt, den ich am Anfang der Rezension zitiere, dann weiß jeder SIEBEN-erfahrene Zuuschauer bereits, wie genial und perfide Doe zugleich ist. Jeder SIEBEN-Einsteiger darf ab diesem Moment mit dem Schlimmsten rechnen... und es wird verdammt weh tun!Passend zur düsteren Stimmung werden die trostlosen Bilder während des Films eingefangen: Es regnet beinahe permanent und niemand wohnt oder lebt in teuren Designerwohnungen. David Fincher zeigt das normale, oftmals trostlos erscheinende Chicago zumeist im Zwilicht und die düsteren Tatorte müssen oft mit Taschenlampen untersucht werden.>>> ZUR BLU-RAY <<<BILD & TON (gesehen auf 50 Zoll-Display / gehört mit 7.1-Set)Für die Blu-Ray-Fassung wurde ein neues Bildmaster erzeugt. Dies hat der Qualität gegenüber den bereits erhältlichen DVD-Fassungen merklich gut getan. Besonders die Gesamt- als auch Detailschärfe wissen zu überzeugen. Auch der Kontrast- und Schwarzwert sind bei einem Film wie diesen sehr wichtig und beide Werte können überzeugen, so dass der Zuschauer auch in den zahlreichen dunklen Szenen noch immer viele Details wahrnehmen kann.Die deutsche 5.1-Dolby Digital-Tonspur kennen wir alle schon von den DVD-Veröffentlichungen und wird dem Medium Blu-Ray leider nicht gerecht. Hier wäre deutlich mehr möglich gewesen. Wer hören möchte, wie ein sehr guter 7.1 DTS-HD Master Audio klingen kann , sollte zum Vergleich einmal auf die englische Sprachfassung umschalten...EXTRASAuch bei den Extras ist mir nichts aufgefallen, was ich nicht schon von den DVD-Veröffentlichungen gekannt hätte. Jedoch sind insbesondere die vorhandenen Audiokommentare durchweg interessant bieten interessante Einblicke in die Entstehung dieses Meilensteins.>>> FAZIT <<<Wer die DVD besitzt und auf die hochauflösende Fassung umsteigen möchte, wird beim Bild einen klaren Qualitätsgewinn feststellen. Unabhängig davon ist SIEBEN ein Film, den man unbedingt einmal gesehen haben sollte!
